How would you react to an E2 who "smart mouths" you in formation?

Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Totally unacceptable.. He/she would be standing before the man. Insubordination should not be tolerated period.

In my time it would have been some wall to wall counseling. I remember mouthing off to my DI and MCRD SD and I came to seeing nice pair of boots. Time has change. I learn to keep my mouth shout and say yes sir, Need less to say it did something right. I retire with 24 years. These kids just don't care they are in for the money and the time to get help with school.

I'm too behind the times. This was a no call in the early '70s but the military changed and in the late '80's on forward, you couldn't do the same. Now ,what I would do then, would get you busted. It depends on your time frame. So, how do you answer this?

LOL I am not in the Military and have never been but I do support you and everything you do. As an older man, I truly regret not serving. That being said, as someone that only worked in the civilian market, I will compare this with life in the civilian sector. Frankly i have had this happen to me as well, in there. My response was, "Get OUT!". If I had had the authority to put them in jail, I might have! LOL As a manager of civilians, I more often got "That is not my job.". I respectfully informed them that their job is whatever the hell I tell them to do! I assume it is much the same in the service! The good news is that you can bring them up on charges for insubordination, and all I could do was fire them!

once upon a time the Bosun's Hole (a storeroom for deck related supplies) was operated by a Torpedoman's Mate named Tiny. He certainly was not Tiny in stature. If you were a problem child on of the Petty Officers would send you to see Tiny. If you needed some specialized tool you were send to see Tiny. The difference was in the delivery...of you were sent there for a tool when Tiny asked you needed you got the appropriate tool. If your answer was "Boats sent me to talk to you the thing you saw was the overhead lights cause Tiny was very fast.

This Happened to me I was a E4 and was giving a E2 a job and he told me no he would not I brought him up on charges

Ask them what they thought they signed up for, and inform them they are being insubordinate. Should they chose to not do the assigned duty they WILL be assigned some thing much worse. With Continued insubordination I would take the recruit out of the barracks along with his fellow privates and make them all perform some physical training, just like back in basic. Should peer pressure not be enough. He can find himself in detention with MPs and be given his Dishonorable discharge with speed.

I would have this marine stand by while the rest of the formation turned to and were dismissed, then this young man would sweat, and while he was swrating i would reitterate the importance of the chain of command and carrying out orders of the marines appointed above them. once convinced the young marine understsnds i would again give him the work assignment if he follows as instructed, i would let him off with weekend dutie for a month. if not then NJP his ass

He messes up everyone messes up! Attention to Detail, Teamwork is the key! Shut him up and shut him up quick if they were like they were on us in Fort Knox! Saw dust pit for hours then the half mile around track with up and down hills right behind it! Yeah, Battle would have to shut up!

As a female I found that the pen is as if not mightier than the sword. I would have to take corrective verbal action immediately so as the cancer could not spread or get out of control. Extra duty right away and counseling later to recommend an ART 15. Men are never afraid of women but you can rip them up with using physical management

Naw, I protest that you "get" say say that there is a difference to men and women. I was public sector but I can't imagine (As a 45 YO white male, who has worked private sector his whole life, I might be mistaken as to the culture of the services.) As an outsider to me and knowing who I am, if you had more authority than I did (Call it supervisor, manager, VP and CEO) you did what you were told. If there was an issue with what you had done then you could rightly pawn that off to the people that told you to do it. The protection of each person goes both ways. I don't think we disagree at all, I only took issue with you, calling yourself out as a female. What you have in your pants matters not a jot compared to what you have on your sleeve or collar.

I was comparing female to male in a physical sense. I never wanted to be a infantry man. I didn't want to tote a 50 lb ruck or a .50cal with me anywhere. Also most men can beat the hell out of a woman but you are both equal with the pen. I don't think in the public sector you would every get the chance to pound on anyone let alone a female. I don't disagree with you at all but it does matter what is in your pants when you are running around in combat, living in the field for weeks, etc. You get the idea. I am glad that you don't think that way in the civilian sector
