Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Explain options of choices and consequences, document informal counseling. insist on immediate compliance or take next step of formal written reprimand.

Make an example out of the E2 right there and right then, professionally but effectively....

Give him a direct order. If he refuses take him directly to the commander's office. I'll get his attention.

I would have a little Sgt time with this E2, along with his team and squad leader. That way we all are on the same page when it comes to my expectations on military bearings, conduct, and duty.

This actually happened to me in the 80's, shitbird was getting out on a discharge, the troops were in position for chow how told him to assume the position, dismissed the troops to chow , he pumped out 10, I then told him to halt, edged the toes of my boots over his fingers and applied pressure, and in a quiet voice told him, I'm glad He's getting his childish ass out, but for the rest of his time, noone needs to be dealing with his cancer and that the other troops were here because they wanted to be , so it would behoove to STFU and do his time in silence. then I stepped back off his fingers and let him go to chow
