Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Since dude is in formation with his buds here is the way I would play it. "Hey no problem. Sit down, take a break. Your squad mates will pick up the slack. Squad Leader, handle it."

That invites a "code red" or "blanket party".....and someone could get seriously hurt or even dead

Maybe, if you leave them unsupervised, but that is another issue. Enlisted can generally police their own minus "adult supervision" from the brass. Peer pressure is some magical shit!

Extra duty, perhaps a company grade article 15 for insubordination. Plus a ass kicking while on maneuver sometime.

In the mid-70's at Fort Bragg a man died from a simple throat punch.... is insubordination now punishable by death?..... are you ready to face a courts martial for manslaughter?

Smoke the E2 till total muscle failure if the soldier still continues to disrespect me then I would recommend an article 15 for disrespect towards a noncomisioned officer.

This is easy... You say nothing tell him to standby and everyone else goes to work. You keep him at attention go get the crew ready for the work day leave the room with him at attention. Go do your job for about 10-15 minutes. Check back later if he's still at attention you can talk to him without the rank person to person and see whats up. If he not there or sitting down you lay off in his ass. Send the little shit bucket to your E6 and be done with it.
