Yes, I saw the M60 phase out and the New M240G take its place. Other variants of the M240 are out there for different branches.

My first crew weapon. Hate to love her , but love to have when the bullets fly. I was later issued the M249 SAW, Great weapon, easy to handle and keep operational. Isn't there a crew served 50cal, in the weapons platoon?
You need a opening in that wall? Cal up the 50 cal crew and it's done!

In my day, the .50 cal were in the Weapons Company, not the Weapons Platoon.

The "PIG" cooking off after extended fire without barrel change. "Joe Snuffy" went off with the asbestos glove to cook C Rations no were to be found. Pouring water or urine to cool barrel using ripped utility shirt to effect barrel change.

Ah- Traverse and Elevation those were the days, thank God we did not have to hump it in the boonies, bipods worked just fine, feed pawl assemblies were a little funky though, heard later models cleared that problem up,hope so the "Pig " could bring serious smoke when it was chugging.

When I first took over the weapons platoon I heard "the bipod is just fine argument". I got permission from the Company Commander, for a bet.

Terms:
__The other 5 guns in the Section combined, firing 300 rounds each, with a three minute time limit using bipods starting in the firing position.
__Me firing 1 gun, firing 300 rounds in two minutes using a tripod with T&E with a 3 minute time limit starting from gun out of action. I got 15 minutes to train 3 0351's to be my gun crew.
__ 44 modified "dog" targets placed to simulate a platoon wedge engaged from a enfilade position from 500 meters.

Prize: They get a 72 vs. My crew gets a 72 and the MG Section and I do a 15 mile force march with the entire MG section on Saturday and 100 pushups anytime any 0331 in my platoon said bipods were just as good.

Results: I enjoyed the forced march, the 0351's enjoyed their 72, and I never had to hear "the bipod is just as fine". Admittedly they suppressed the target, and that is really the primary purpose of the MG section on the move. But they wounded/killed five targets. My crew wounded/killed 17 targets. Who is more suppressed?

Just to show off, the Battalion's CWO2 Gunner, then out performed them with my crew and another crew he trained from the assault section, firing in defilade with two guns using indirect observed fire, starting with guns in action. 300 rounds each tube 3 minute time limit. They wounded/killed 7 targets.

Maj John Bell-Sir, I used "the bipod is just fine" comment only in reference to my experience in Vietnam in the years 1966-67 our AO was the Central Highlands, triple canopy jungle, rivers, hills all conditions that made it all but impossible to set up any long term defensing firing platforms,I imagine they did employ tripods with T&E at the larger base camps and fire bases.I was trained at Fort Lewis Wa,my division was originally slated to deploy to Germany so we were trained on the use of the T&E mechanism for the M60 and am sure it was a much more effective platform than the bipods we used in the field in Vietnam, hope I made some sense in my explanation Sir.

Sir I think there are some National Guard units that may still have the M-60. Although it is heavier I would prefer the 60 to the 240. I have personally seen the pig fire full of mud in under the feed tray!

The 60 is about 4 lbs lighter than the 240B and the weight was better distributed for dismounted ops. The 240 is very front heavy, but it does fire a whole lot faster lol.

SMSgt Jesse Ohlsson - The cyclic rate depending on which model you had was 550-600 rounds per minute. We taught "Six round burst Marine" as our trigger time. My Co GySgt said when no one is shooting at you that's too long, but its just right in a fire fight.

SMSgt Jesse Ohlsson - I was taught, "I f**k fat chicks," or "I wanna kill a family of six" for the M249, and M240
