In the Infantry your unit controls what you do to Govt issue. I warned some of my folks not to go all HIGH SPEED when they went ahead and painted their M-4's and on the sly added gear queer crap. When we got home most of my guys just needed to clean their weapons and turn them in, the high speed low drag self appointed commandos spent many extra hours returning their weapons to original condition and it was not fun for them. I watched grown men purchase thousands of dollars of crap to trick out their weapons only to stay behind the wire the whole deployment. I guess they looked good in their selfies though.
I understand you excitement and curious mode but it would be best to just keep a low profile about certain things till you get to your unit and see what the situation is like, many units are different. Believe me when I say that after well over 35 years I have seen almost all of it and this is the best advice that will cause you the least blow back.

William Hay - Me Sarcastic ? Sarcasm is a tool in the tool box, with each dose of sarcasm there is a nugget of wisdom. Let me share a bonus nugget when you graduate OSUT at Benning and you report to your first unit learn to avoid senior NCO's. This is a survival tip that I learned very early on in life :) If you are walking up on a SNCO or think about say hello to a SGM/CSM while going about your duty day, don't run away quickly.

Do not be the private that gets out of basic and buys all high speed equipment. The E4s, E5s and 6s will notice and clown you for it lol you want to remain low profile and just do what you gotta do.

Grip and stock. Getting your own optic or laser was highly frowned upon. Of course, our Battalion Commander was rocking a Eotech 553 Tan on his M4. But he was the BC, so he could do what he wants. I had an Eotech which oddly survived two tours, but I asked for permission and it wasn't a problem. My stock was Magpul CTR stock. If its over the top, you will be identified as a Gear Queer.... I on the other hand was the accepted Geardo of my platoon and when it came in handy no one said boo about it.

Would stuff like the electronic ear pro fly ? Or a vented combat long sleeve . I know it probably does not matter and anyone that been in the military for a couple years can give a shit about little gear things . Lol I do not want to be that guy but hey one of the reasons I’m joining is because I enjoy that type of stuff in the states too .

The answer is yes. The only limitations on this will be at the discretion of your CO, 1SG, and the armorer. Strangely enough, if the armorer, regardless of their rank, doesn't want to deal with your stupid stuff, then you can't do anything about it; it is after all their property after they sign their hand receipt. As far as customizing weapons goes, when I was an armorer, I allowed soldiers to switch out anything besides the upper receiver, lower receiver, and the inside guts of the weapon. Pistol grips, hand guards, stocks, optics, if you wanted to invest in making that M4 something crazy, then you could go for it.
Usually, no one cares what you do with your kit. If there is an SOP set by the unit, then so be it.

In an Infantry division, can you customize your rifle and some of your gear?

I don't think so with the firearms, because the 1911 I used in the 70s, would look something like mine today. lol

If I were your Armorer I would tell you to stay with government issue because that is what your
trained on and your probably going to shoot better with what your trained on. Secondly, I might say you should stop calling people "brother" until at least you get through Infantry OSUT and have some years of experience behind you.

I'd recommend nothing more than a fore grip or hand stop and maybe a cheek rest on the stock. If you already own a rifle and want to swap out stocks that's usually cool too. A few guys opted to use their own eotech optics but they were only allowed if you could zero and qual with it.

Bit of advice. Once you get to your unit. Don’t go out and buy a bunch of cool guy stuff right away. Spend some time setting up your kit and adjusting to youre liking. Then find out what you could really use.

William Hay I served from 1968 to 1972, and with the exception of snipers and a few others, the answer is no. In Vietnam, some Marines drew peace signs on their helmet covers, etc. A lot depended on your unit. What do you think needs to be customized and why?

I’m in a recon section and I’ve not had any problems with the standard issue. Got issued ACH Camo Netting and Ruck Camo netting but even think that’s is irritating as it gets caught up in branches during night movements. If it helps you accomplish the mission and within sop I don’t see why your unit or section would be opposed to it. If not then probably not.

Before you worry about custom gear learn the difference between being in a Infantry Division and a Infantry Unit.

Being in an Infantry Division does not mean you are in a Infantry unit. Brigade and above, in some cases even battalions, have a mix of all job skills within the lower units. For example you can be in 1st Infantry Division and be a part of the support battalion as a truck driver. Or you could be in an Infantry Company in 1st Armored Division. As an Infantryman you can go to almost any type of unit. Even down to the company and platoon level there are always different job skills but the war fighting function of the unit is Infantry, Recon, Support, Intelligence ect. As an Infantryman you will most likely be in a Infantry position but it does not mean you will be in an Infantry Division.

Also don't go all PX Ranger Geardo on us. Use the equipment issued for the most part and buy the few things that may make life a bit easier as you go. Remember if something is lost or broken the Army only replaces issued items. Also there can be legal problems if you have an unauthorized weapon systems down range or even in garrison. For example if you modify your weapon IN ANY WAY and have an accident on the firing range you may be found at fault even in cases that the modification was not the direct cause.
