Is it rational to fear ISIS & Al Quaida? So why does the press call it Islamophobia?

I was taught "phobia" means "an irrational fear of"...but it's rational to be afraid to get your head chopped off, isn't it? Is this PC run amok, or just another attempt to grab you with a headline?

There are a bunch of common answers here, and I agree with most of what has been said, but I would add this to the table, and if someone has already said it I apologize, but our ability to fight should not be based out of fear or hatred, it should be based off our ability to legitimately identify a threat and complete our mission before they accomplish theirs. But if we operated out of Islamophobia, we would cease to possess positive identification, and very potentially create a new conflict just trying to end the previous ones.

Let's rephrase the question a little and add some historical context for shits and giggles. Imagine a German circa 1940 asking another fellow German, "Is antisemitism okay because some of our 'enemies' are Jewish?" Mull over that for a minute and come back to the original question presented in the title and see where you stand on things.

Wait, so there were a sub-set of extremist Jews flying planes into buildings, committing suicide bombings and atrocities of all sorts across the globe, and taking over broad swaths of geography under the name of their religion, in 1940? False comparison.

Col Joseph Lenertz not entirely false. The point is the nazi's views the Jewish people as villians and blamed them for some of Germany's issues at the time. That lead to an entire religous belief being targeted. Some many have caused the anger and or fear Germany felt but not all. I know nazi germany is beyond just that and you have to consider the whole Aryan elitism that they also felt. but on a minimal level this is mildly similar.

Col Joseph Lenertz, you seem to have missed my point. Jews were considered the source of many a Germans misery during their economic depression between WWI and WWII. Jews weren't committing atrocities, but a lot of Germans directly attributed Jews with being a primary cause of their personal misfortune. This led to national antisemitism which loosely correlates to our nations current views on muslims. We all know what Germany did with that antisemitism, and it's naive to think it wont ever happen again. People want to hate on muslims? Fine, they should just know that there's a historical precedent for where that train of thought leads to.

No we should detain the 80 year old blue haired old lady at the airport not a Muslim male militant. C'mon that's just racist

Westboro Baptist are condemned by everyone. I see that in the news and web. They are not even fringe group. No one takes them seriously. So you cannot compare them to Radical Islam. Have you seen any Muslim stand up against the radicals in Islam who threatend and killed the cartoonist who drew a picture of Mohamed?

NO it is not okay, especially in America. Racism has no place in modern times, and islamophobia is racism and ethnocentric as well. You shouldn't blame the many for the actions of a few. That's in anything/subject.

Islam isn't a race, it's a belief. Islamophobia may be bigotry, but it's not racism.

Read the question again. It refers to ISIS and Al Quaida, not Islam. That's why I have a problem with the press calling fear of those two groups Islamophobia.

It is rational to be concerned about ISIL and Al-Qaeda. The problem is that we often associate all Muslims with these organizations...that's when it becomes Islamophobia.

I believe radicalism of Muslims is performed by seducing the youths who live in poverty. They are bitter and jealous of how Westerners live, and joining a movement gives them a higher purpose they are seeking.

What is really annoying, MAJ, is that we are teaching our Middle Schools the Islam religion for at last check three weeks. Far more than the rest of any religions included in the curriculum. Given the right slant and we are opening the door on a daily basis.

MCPO Roger Collins - We have gone crazy, I don't know what else to say. When some groups of people publicly cry out about their position in life, the administration often speaks on their behalf and legitimizes their grievances. I want to know why the administration does not speak for veterans in reference to the VA.

Or maybe we need more education on what Islam actually entails, so our youth don't fall for the distorted propaganda used by radicals to seduce them into terrorism. Most of America is pretty familiar with Christianity. We would view anyone trying to use the bible to perpetuate a holy war against innocent people as a nut-job. Perhaps if we had more people familiar with Islam, we would view those using the Koran to perpetuate a holy war the same way.
