Im Samoan and Ive always leaned to the right. Why do folks give me this weird..."oh...but...i mean aren't you suppose to be a Democrat?" type stare. I had a couple of Democrat Canvass folks stop by my house. And the reaction on their face was priceless. They were white but were confused and kind of bewildered when they were told by Me and my wife (who is a first Gen Haitian American) that we were registered Republicans.

Should it matter what race defines your beliefs or religion? People used to give me weird stares for being Muslim.
Hell, people were surprised I was an Asian American serving in the US Military.

I'm conservative in many areas but refuse to identify with either party, You are absolutely right about how Democrats assume that people of color will fall under their domain.

SPC Eddie "Nemo" Aiumu, the Democrats have divided up people by race for so long that they cannot understand it when they run across individual choice and our common shared humanity rather than the group identity that they expect.
The interesting thing to me is that they like to call conservatives racist while their entire world revolves around race and other identity divisions.
It is refreshing to see individuals like you and your wife that think for themselves from base principles rather than being led into division by group identity.
Thank you for posting this – it made my day.

Now you're talking my language SPC Eddie "Nemo" Aiumu., REPUBLICAN! While I dont know if you identify as black but as Im thinking the Samoan race is one that originates from Polynesia you indicated that your wife is. The Democrats have done more to set back the cause of blacks all over the country going back to the Civil War.

Sgt Jay Jones
SFC William Farrell you make a valid point about the Democrats have set back the progress of Black American since the Civil War. However, the Democratic party during the Civil War is not the same Democratic party of today, just as the Republican party of the Civil War is not the same Republican party as today's Republican party. I would say that the roles reversed during the Civil Rights movement when many "Dixiecrats" switched to the Republican party and the "Goldwater" Republicans took over. The Democratic party became more socialists minded during the same time frame.

Sgt Jay Jones - Thank you Jay for your response. You are right, things do change over time. I remember seeing something on this list regarding how the Democratic party has set back Blacks. It was humorous and serious at the same time. all the best!

I don't think its weird. Actually from what I have heard and read the conservative platform actually aligns more with black America than do those of the Liberals. I just think the liberals are good at making minorities believe that its the other way around.

While I don't think of myself as a conservative at all, I've never understood why people were surprised to find out a person of color could be conservative.
There was a pretty good discussion I happened to catch on the news a while back that was about how Republicans could better attract Hispanic and African American voters and the pundit pointed how those communities shared many values and traits with conservatives. And when you think about it, it makes sense. Both groups tend to have strong sense of faith, emphasize the importance of the family unit, and many hold traditional attitudes towards social issues. So really, when you think about it, it's hardly surprising at all.

Way to go, SPC! Continue to think for yourself. Hillsdale College has a good FREE course on the limits and original intent of the Constitution..

SPC Alumu- My posts are messing up but I will take a shot at giving you my opinion. To many students are taught by progressive liberal propagandists. I first was exposed to this while teaching Advanced ROTC to contact MSIIIs (JR's).

SPC Alumu-part 2 it successfully posted so I continue. One of my Cadets honor roll grades, brought me his paper he had turning opposing the U.S. gives a ways in negotiating SALT II agreement (Jimmy Carter). It looked good to me. Cadet was given a D-, because he had opposed the socialist professor. This was U. of North Alabama, 1979. I was working on MA degree at night (influencing school teachers) my faculty advisor was a NG commo Battalion Commander. He was great except he volunteered me to head up a middle school evalution team for the class. Anyway, he told me to take it to the University Academic Board. So I as an undeserved courtesy I called Mr. Profession and requested he relook the D- grade, before I went to the Board. Told he had 72 hours before I took action and was sending a Xerox copy (I retained the original) Less than 24 hours later, the Cadet had a new B+ grade. I was told the Prog. Prof. no longer hissed at him on uniform day. We can assume things are worse today. Several years ago the Alumni News Magazine had an article on IN A commissionees. My one Femal cadet battalion cdr (300 cadets enrolled, 20 plus commissioned) retired USAR MP COL. She was good. Never joined the Cadet Ranger Plt, but did ABN and AASLT schools.

SPC Alumu- Your essay is spot on. How did the black students get to walk out? Being retired, I do get to disrespect Obozo, because he and the media elites disrespect me, my military and my country. POTUS had to give up his law licence when he was caught lying on his application, Michelle had to give up her licence to escape felony prosecution for insurance fraud in 1992. He was not a law professor, he was a lecturer, teaching a little taken constitutional law course only on the 14th Amendment. He has ignored and abused the U.S. Constitution. He also claimed American Samoa was one of 57 states?!¿¡. I self ID as a Christian (common sense) conservative (original intent) Constitutionalist. But, what do I know, I'm a growing older member of the REAL 1% (Serving & served Military!). Go forth my brother!

SPC Punefuolemoto Aiumu- My eyes are bad or my ebook screen is so small I was typing AL instead of Ai, please accept my apology. Your picture looks sharp but that tight haircut is a Virginia Military Institute RAT (freshman) haircut. 40 haircuts for the year were a cadet account charge of $40.00 in '67-'68. I pay $12 for a trim (once a month) and tip the girl $2. Shop owner's son in law is a SEAL at Little Creek. VA.

I agree with JP4...race shouldn't really be an issue. What you find important and who you think will best deliver on those needs should be the primary factor in politics. Labels are dangerous and outdated.

I think it's odd there aren't a lot more minorities that are Conservatives. Of course, I only say that with the understanding that Republicans aren't "Conservative" in the classical sense. The Conservative model calls for individual liberty and equality, not group identification. One would think that minorities would wish to be recognized and treated as equal individuals, instead of lumping themselves into one group or another. Conservativism/Libertarianism follows this model and it is often perplexing to find so many identifying with a group that often does not represent their personification and beliefs.
