U.S. Trademark and Patent Office should get out of this. How long has this team been playing pro football? Who is next on the Name that team hit list? Leave pro football alone!

I agree with you SGT Mehaffie. Not only do we need to forgive, the powers that be need to quit thrusting divisive issues out there. Many times I think these issues are politically generated just for the sake of creating division.
If one has watched the elections over the past twenty years, America has been almost split in half on issues, and the politicians keep adding fuel to the fire just to keep people stirred up .
Thank you for the feedback.

It is really sad Charles, when the politicians get to the point they interfere with professional sports. They should leave well enough alone. It isn't like the name just appeared. CRAZY!!!

They should keep it. True, our nation is evolving, but into what? IMHO, there are too many people trying so hard to stand apart and stand for something that is against long established ideas and institutions. Change is good, standing up for something is good, but what are people really trying to say when they take a stand on every possible point of contention out there?
Then one starts to wonder, are people really wanting this change or is the media fighting the fire while fanning the flames?
Has this slight been brewing since the team's founding in 1932 and is only coming to a head now? Will the Braves, the Black Hawks and the Chiefs have to go or are those symbols OK with the same crowd that has issue with the redskins?

SFC Cook and MAJ Ballinger,
Please read thru both of your posts. I'm pretty sure that Rally Point was not created so others could conduct personal attacks on this forum, and that's exactly what is going on here. As a Native American with what appears to be very strong ties to his community, it is obvious that SFC Cook is very passionate about this issue and you MAJ Ballinger should respect his point of view and move on.
Now onto my personal opinion, what our country did to the Native Americans was a travesty. I don't think changing the name of the Redskins is too much to ask to atone for all the death and destruction that our forefathers wrought. Many of these posts on here, if uttered in a professional Military setting, would be brought to the unit EO rep. It sickens me to think that just because this is not affiliated with the military that the rules that govern our actions have been thrown out the window. What you write on here should be exactly what you would be willing to say at work. Again, my personal opinion so please if you are going to attack me for my personal opinion please contact me directly and not on this forum.

SFC Cook and Maj Ballinger - I have to echo both LT Bearden and Master Sgt Conner. Both of you have very strong opinions. Can you both agree to disagree and stop now? Enough should be enough. Thanks to both of you.

Ditto. There is as much passion in here as a 2nd Amendment discussion but no one has crossed the line into EO territory. Everyone has freely expressed their opinion and SFC Cook is clearly passionate about his point of view. Its our collective responsibility to keep things in check and bring the heavy boils down to a simmer and that has attempted to be done.

Sfc cook. The term red is no more racial than white, black, brown, yellow. And correct me if I am wrong, but Indians kept slaves themselves, usually other Indians, there have been other races including whites, some later were adopted in to the tribe and married.

I believe our nation is becoming to sensitive to anything anyone says and we are loosing our past and our heritage.

SFC Jeremy Cook you're referring to the term "chief" or "redskin" if the latter, the more appropriate term would be "was" not "is". Historically yes, that is the origin of the word, however that is not the context of its use.

@Major Ballinger, I agree whole heartedly. However, in todays world perception is often the reality no matter how skewed that perception may be.

I don't have strong feelings about this one, but I voted they should change because it's offensive: It is offensive to Native Americans, so they should do the right thing.

Everybody is touchy about something. When I hear the name "Redskins" I never think negative thought about American Indians. With a diverse 320 million people in our country, we will rarely find a name that doesn't offend someone. Perhaps the red skins should get thick skin.

Then there's this:

From another source (The Washington Post would never print this):
A leader of the Navajo Code Talkers who appeared at a Washington Redskins home football game said Wednesday the team name is a symbol of loyalty and courage -- not a slur as asserted by critics who want it changed.

The group was recognized during the Redskins-49ers game as a joint celebration of the NFL's Salute to Service month and Native American Heritage month.

At a Navajo high school, embracing ‘Redskins’
At a Navajo high school, the Red Mesa Redskins have become a potent symbol in the national debate over a NFL team name.

SSgt (Join to see) Keep it. Let's slow the ebb and tide of political correctness. The Redskins have been so named for a considerable portion of time. Until the age of PC crept up on us, no one had an issue.

Why isn't there an option for 'I don't follow football, and really don't give a rat's you know what' ???

Amanda Blackhorse, a Navajo who successfully moved a federal agency to withdraw trademark protections from the Washington Redskins because it considers the team's name derogatory, lives on a reservation where Navajos root for the Red Mesa High School Redskins. She opposes this name; the Native Americans who picked and retain it evidently do not.

I have a dilemma when it comes down to this topic because as I do sympathize with Native American tribes that feel disrespected by the teams name, I don't agree with the government stand on the issue. I believe that this is a civil matter and there is plenty of topics that require our government attention more than the name of a private enterprise. Where do we draw the line with being political correct are we going to change cracker jacks, Cracker Barrel, Kansas city chiefs that's a native reference, or what about every troop name in Calvary units like Apache, Black Foot etc, are we going to change those as well. I personally like most Americans do not associate the name Red Skins with racism but I think of RGIII and why Cousins is not the starter. I think this issue should be left to the civil courts.

I was called a "cracker" in the military by angry black men. So should I hate the Cracker Jack name too! Where does it end with liberals? Don't get me wrong? Overall me and the brothers bunked and roomed together and loved each other like real brothers. But where does this judging stupidity end???
