Ah yes, we've all seen them; "so, there you were" in a theater or a room full of service members or veterans, one minute everything's ok, then all of a sudden there it is... the over-the-top military movie discrepancy! So, what was that moment that stands out most in your mind? What are those associated memories or stories that come to mind? Did the base theater erupt into 'chaos' over an unkempt/incorrect uniform, improper language/jargon/ customs, or was there something that was just plain 'unsat' from a military point-of-view. lol Well, there's a ton of them out there, and I'm pretty sure that something should immediately come to mind, so what are we waiting for? Quick, pull up a keyboard, and let's get this thing started; thanks for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

The two most fresh in my mind, because I commented on them in another post, are both from "A Few Good Men."  The first is the "Conduct Unbecoming a United States Marine" conviction.  The other is how the producers make it seam as though a Marine Corps Lieutenant out ranks a Navy Lieutenant.

Plus, if it came down to branch of service, isn't the Navy older than the Marine Corps? I am pretty sure the Navy's birthday is 13 October, 1775 and the USMC's birthday is 10 November, 1775.

SFC, except for the fact that the Navy wasn't commissioned until 1796... they made up the date when they realized that the Coast Guard was going to be older than they were (we were founded in 1789).

Actually, what we now know as the Navy was commissioned in 1797 However, George Washington commissioned 7 ships in 1775 to interdict British supply lines. The Continental Navy was disbanded after the war until the Congress ordered 6 frigates to be built in 1794. It took three years to build the first three ships, hence the 1797. The predecessor of the modern Coast Guard was the only armed naval presence from 1790 to 1797.

There is a catch all chapter in the UCMJ where you can pretty much write up any misconduct like that. I actually had to use it back in the last century when I was a company commander. I'm sure we can find a JAG officer to fill us in.

Iron Man. After the convoy comes under attack and the fire team leader calls "contact left"; they proceed to get out on the side in which they ate taking fire! What?

Col (Join to see), Private Benjamin (movie) was on TV the other night. Please be assured that I did not watch it in its entirety, although one time I think I did.
However, she did a John Wayne (as in The Green Berets). She jumped out and was not hooked up! What makes this even more bizarre is that she was at skydiving altitude (the Colonel says earlier, "See you at 13,000 feet"). She was jumping a T-10 parachute system, which is designed for static line use only. Sure enough, the stunt jumper is shown pulling a ripcord in freefall and has a good canopy (35', T-10, OD in color). However, the only ripcord available would have been for the reserve canopy which would have been a white, 22' canopy.
This makes the John Wayne jump sequence tame compared to the Private Benjamin fiasco!

The first time I watched "Basic" with Samuel Jackson... I about had an aneurysm due to the "military" inconsistencies. Whoever (if anyone) was the military advisor for this film should have been summarily executed during post-production.

It's been awhile since watching that movie, but I believe Samuel Jackson's rank changed throughout the movie. There was also a scene where he wore his poncho like a cape, that gave me a good laugh also.

Im torn between hurtlocker making eod look like they do more then play wi th remote control cars and Jack teacher making mps look tough. The absolute worst gaff I've seen in a military movie was to be in American Sniper. The scene where Bradley cooper runs into the amputee at the auto shop and the kid tells him "you really should swing by the VA", yeah, said no vet ever!

Actually I work hard to get kids to go to the VA. I have former soldiers send vets to me for help at the VA. So, yeah.

Patton. As a kid I always wondered why the Germans were using American M48 tanks. This was when I was 8 and I knew the difference

Loads of movies had that problem. Two great exceptions (until Saving PVT Ryan) were the converted Leo's A Bridge Too Far, and the very Tiger-like converted T34s in Kelly's Heroes (later to appear in Saving PVT Ryan and Band of Brothers).

Gotta be the entire "Iron Eagle" movie series. Come'on the entire premise of teenagers stealing planes from an Air Force Base, hacking computers, breaking into sensitive areas, setting up a mission and all the logistics involved with said mission? gimme a break this movie should have been listed as "scifi/fantasy instead of action and adventure.

Col (Join to see), check out this scene in the blubbery celluloid disaster called "Dear John", with Channing Tatum and released in 2010. His staff sergeant epaulets on his Class A shirt are reversed for the entire scene. One might ask why I would even know about this scene, considering how insipid the movie is and my defense is that my wife made me do it!

My navy squadron was the Firebirds. LOL! There wasn't a single helo on deck, and we had four different types of planes. Not one of them was broke wing.
