once again this is a false debate.

as the army always allowed beards (SF, profiles). also the military already has and has always had some type of waiver or religious rules that allow ppl to wear religious head gear. the new policy goes a lil farther.

http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/130017p.pdf

the army gone even farther.

http://www.deomi.org/DiversityMgmt/RelAccomMilitary.cfm

so either someone didn't inform this soldier that he can wear religious head already. and it been a rule for over 30 years. we have google.

the military also has a ID policy. that covers religious head gear.

Leaders, please educate your self to military and army polices and rules. Oh and the rules where put in place because Jewish and conservative christians wanted to wear religious head gear. not pushed by muslims (but we did benefit form it). the last three picks are of me. LOL!!!!

armylife oldman fatboy style!!!!!!

Wait a minute, sergeant. So you're telling me no one is forcing anyone to do anything? You mean the Army can carry on like always and just move ahead?

Nice pictures, brother. I always thought someone way above anyone's paygrade here decided whether or not people can have exemptions, I don't know why everyone has become the SMA or Army Chief of Staff all of a sudden.

I notice the most complaining from dipshits who have never served a day, but have something to say when a Muslim or a Sikh want to serve the United States military.

Sgt Gambino and Sgt Abul-Aziz, great post! The issue here is Muslims want something. As you see, if it has to due with a Muslim wanting something reasonable that will not affect the mission of the Army, Air Force, Marine's, or Navy there will be a lot of people against it. This is simply based on these certain people wearing a uniform do not like Muslims, Arabs, or other certain groups and not having the courage to say it.

please see the army regulations and Military regulations links I posted. this is not new it been army and military rules for over 30 years. it was pushed for by Jewish & conserivative Christians. Like I said Muslims and Sikh have benefited from this. i posted picks of a Jewish Colonel with a beard, & Jewish head gear, a same with a Captain. I a pic of two Sikh officers. I even posted pics of my self in uniform. the article is either poorly fact check, or just false. like I said the , military has allowed this for over 30 years now.

below is some pics of different religions in the military. the fact that we are all different but united in one duty is what makes not only our military great, but also our country.

I have been retired now for just over a year and I sit hear and shake my head over so many things that I have seen happen in just this short amount of time and I wonder, just what the f*&^ is going on in the DoD...I realize that we are a nation with a strong sense of religious freedom and accommodation, but at the same time we are talking about the armed forces of the United States of America!! I swear half of the crap I see, hear and read about would never even have been given a seconds thought 27 years ago when I enlisted...smfh.....

Soon we won't be able to tell the enemy from friends. Demands soon become the norm. Rules and regulations mean nothing. Soon honor killings will be demanded. Soon the enemy will no longer be in sight because we won't know who the enemy is. The enemy will be us.

This is why being in uniform is so important so we don't kill our own men/women. To see the picture of the one in the turban and beard next to the one with the shaved face and military code hat if I were in the field could have easily mistaken the one in the turban and beard as an enemy by accident easily. Our men/women don't have time to sit and ponder is this person with the turban and beard with us or against us. The beards and turbans out there in combat are one distinction our troops have to tell who the enemy is because they are not dressed to our military code. Those of you who are serving our country in sincere heart please for the sake of our country accept the rules you signed up for once you have finished your duty we will honor you for your sacrifices to shave your beards and wear our uniforms in pride, just as I had cut my hair which was a covering to me when I prayed. Freedoms must be earned at some cost to shave a beard or take off a turban is far from taking your life. God also sees and understands all reasons for why things happen. My hair has never grown back to the length it once was but I still have it as a covering and God has rested my heart over it all as He will all others as well.

Man, I can not believe the ignorance shown in the story or especially shown in the comments here. EDUCATE yourselves Troops . . .

Many of you are making comments pertaining to Muslim's . . . based on the headline, while the story is actually about Sikh's.

Those falling for the "Muslim" angle have fallen into the grasp of propaganda and are a NO-GO! I can understand this from E1-E5 . . . but, it's embarrassing when I see E6-E9 and Officers failing to be informed and knowledgeable.

Good thing you're done with the debate . . . as you've still missed the point! The point is, the headline states Muslim's, but the story is about Sikh's.

Whether Sikh, Sunni, Shi'ite, Muslim, or Buddhist. Christians have silently hidden their signs of religion to conform to military customs and courtesies. Religious medallions, garments, and articles had to be hidden or suffer ridicule, reprimand, or letters. Now the Middle East is demanding their customs to be relaxed. Other nations have allowed it. No longer will everyone be cohesive. There will be uniform differences. Soon medals will be different, dress will be different. Transsexuals will be allowed to wear female clothing or adorn female headgear. It won't stop. Once you allow religion and civilian interference into military regulations, it is over. So Sikhism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, or whatever, our military is never going to be the same. Allowance to one is an allowance to all.

I guess you can call me a bit of a purist when it comes to the uniform. If you look up the definition of a uniform (i saved you the time below)

Not changing in form or character; remaining the same in all cases and at all times.

So I have a problem adjusting the uniform in ANY case that isn't for safety reasons (i.e. flight line). So that means that I disapprove of any change for any reason that doesn't apply to all. the Yamaka has been approved (for a long time now) for Soldiers of the Jewish faith and I disagree with that as well. I am not for any change that will make you different from the person standing to your left and right.

This isn't as large of a comparison by head-gear, but I am a Christian by religion. I was told to tuck in my cross to wear it under my shirt. Was I any less of a Christian? No. Take religion out of the equation all-together and get to the main purpose of the uniform and get back to it.

Cheers!

So you'd be okay with trashing the blue cord for infantry, the Stetson and spurs for cav, the Green Beret for SF, Tan for Rangers, Maroon for Airborne? After all, those set soldiers apart, and are not uniform....

You do not join the military to be an individual. You join to be part of a TIME HONORED TRADITION. A tradition that dates back to the creation of the country we took an oath to defend. You did not join to instill your traditions into the system. To change the system to accomadate you. These traditions have a long history, a history fueled by individuals who left there traditions at the door and adapted to those of the military. We all came from other parts of the world whether our selves or our ancestors. But we chose to adopt our new found culture. As a country we have lost our way. In large part due to losing our fundemental principles this country was built on. You have the right to practice what relegion you deem fit. That is your choice. You chose to honor the traditions of the military branch you signed up for. Again your choice. You were very well informed on the culture of the military beforehand and if not shame on you. Should have done your research. Our military needs to be a united front because if we look divided then we are divided and no longer a super power. When a person stands out they become a target, easier to conquer and to exploit there weakness. In short stop trying to change the military to the individual and make the indidual adapt to the team. A team will always be stronger than the individual. Those of us who signed on that dotted line bleed red, white and blue. During duty hours we salute the same leaders. In private we can kneel and bow to whatever god we chose.

SPC Michael B. You have worded it exactly the way it should be. In our bible it says a house that is divided can not stand and I think that falls into the same thing here. The military needs to stay together in uniform as it has done forever.
When signing the dotted line you agree to the terms of the military standards and by doing so you need to stay to that and stand proudly in which ever uniform you signed up for. If you dont want to be in the military under those standards take your discharge and move on with your life. Like the one girl above had stated she wears her uniform proudly and is respected by others and instead of her smoking she uses that time for her religious prayer time. I respect her as well, There are many things in the military we may not have liked to do but we did it with honor and so should everyone else who signs up.

Ok, if we're uniform, then bye bye to the Infantry Blue Cord, the Stetson and Spurs for the cav, and anything else that sets us apart from each other.. after all, gotta be uniform.

May the Gods Bless you Mister Walker. Exactly the point that needs to be made.

There are many variations to the Army uniform already in existence.

These manifestations of frustration are targeted at a religious minority due to ignorance and hatred. There is no rational reason to be angry or offended by exceptions or exemptions for Muslims.

Lt Col (Join to see) is correct as well. The fellow pictured is a Sikh. If one is going to post ignorance, I suppose it is only fitting that one reveals one's own ignorance.

Stop the hate.

Muslims are not all one thing or another. They are as individual as Buddhists, Hindus, Zoroastrians, Animists and, yes, Christians.

I have been 'demanding' to not shave for years now...no one listens. That's it, I creating a new religion. Can't shave, can only work 3 days a week (my choosing) and I must be stationed in my 'holy land' (which I think will be Aruba). That should cover it!

SPC (P) love the way you word things. I admire you carry on man carry on. I too would be on the edge being in the service now days and never no when a granade may come flying in my tent while asleep when I should be able to trust all those in camp around me to have my back or lay down their life for me as I would them if need be. I pray for you always soldiers and hold you all close to my heart and when I hear these bad stories that kill our men it brings tears running down my eyes and nightmares come. Like now just to think that our country can allow men in the military that may take the chance to do this to our own men shame on them.

Don't really agree with it uniformity wise. However, the photo is a Sikhs. Which are a warrior sect in India that really does not like the Middle East and has been fighting in the region since before we were even a country. Just annoys me on all these articles floating around they put a Sikh in and talk about Muslims which are not the same thing.

Yeah I just shook my head, it went on facebook and people made some stupid comments. I know a few Sikhs and they are by and large massive quiet guys. When GWOT broke out, some immigrated to US to join our Army to go and fight. I think one got a Silver Star in Iraq. Good dudes.

The other thing to keep in mind is that--while I understand it is not OUR tradition in the US Military--the British and Indian Armies have been employing Sikh and Hindu soldiers sporting turbans for, oh . . . a few hundred years. Even in post-colonial modern Britain, it is a non-issue to see a British soldier w/ a turban . . . Britain has been using soldiers like that for centuries.

Lets face it, the real issue here is that--since the US Military has never had many Sikhs or Hindus (or Muslims) in it (most of these groups didn't immigrate to the US in large numbers until the 1980s), it strikes a lot of Americans as odd to see a soldier with a turban or a beard. I get that.

But the whole gas mask issue, etc is nonsense. The Indian Army is pretty concerned about NBC warfare and I think they're doing just fine. And, for what its worth, the Israeli Army seems to do okay with soldiers w/beards and yarmulkes. Though I realize yarmulkes are "legal" within US Military uniform codes.
