I think that is absolutely perfect.
The men and women of the vessel should have the honor of their ship's namesake's decoration on board.
Having said that, the Navy should be able to ensure the familiy still has one.

I think it is awesome. And 1SG (Join to see) I totally agree that the Navy should make sure (and am certain they will) that the family is presented with a replacement, possibly in the form of a shadow box with a photo of the placement of theirs). Give them something of substance to hold that memory.

A class act by the family. Even though he should have received the MOH, this is a significant tip of the hat to hard working sailors and ensures that he isn't forgotten.

I think its great. Being on a ship, you get attached to the things that set your ship apart from others. I served aboard the USS MAHAN DDG 72, towards the end of my tour, we were presented with the stern Name plate from the previous MAHAN. We honored it by placing it on the mess deck to be seen by all that dine aboard the ship. I think that the Navy Cross will be placed in a similar manner and will be honored on a daily basis.

As an amphib Sailor, I have never had the opportunity to serve aboard a ship named for an American Hero. All of my ships have been named after American cities, the only exception was a ship named after the first American amphibious landing (a little trivia). I always felt, that serving on aboard a ship named after an American Hero such as the PERALTA, MURPHY or DUNHAM, that the crew would have a much better connection to the ship because of it's namesake.
To quote CAPT Mike Abrashoff in reference to his Sailors onboard BENFOLD (a ship named after an FMF Corpsman who was awarded the Medal of Honor in Korea), "I wanted my crew to display courage and step up to the plate just as Edward Benfold had done."
Her crew will have a heavy burden, but I know the Sailors who man her will live up to example set forth by Sgt. Rafael Peralta.
