1SG (Join to see). Great topic. Most commercial pre-gym supplements contain stimulants (caffein, synephrine [very similar to effedrine]) and some carbs (similar to sugars and/or chocolate) that are intended to make you feel less fatigued and emotionally happier. Stimulants drive up heart rate, blood pressure, and are diuretics . . . can kill.
You can go back and forth about this all day long . . . but why not consider eating a decent breakfast, have a cup or two of coffee if you need it, hydrate before during and after the gym (particularly if you are taking a stimulant that makes your kidneys work overtime), and add common protein powder (whey or other) to a blended fruit and berry shake to rebuild and/or increase muscle mass? Try eating and working out the organic way before any supplement.
If it is a question of motivation . . . why not work out with a platonic/other same/other sex buddy . . . so you know someone else is depending on you to show up and perform a first rate all out workout? I personally prefer platonic Marine Gunny or DI . . . the kind with a heart of gold . . . knows how to motivate . . . as personal alarm and trainer.
Yes . . . some supplement components . . . like Bitter Orange derived Synepherine . . . can pop hot on UA!!!
Warmest Regards, Sandy

I would be careful and double check the ingredients as Maj Stanton referenced. Also, if you do use them, HYDRATE! I had to medevac someone who was using supplements and went into kidney failure because they weren't drinking enough water.

I have used supplements before. For me they seem to give me extra boost of energy and I did find that I could push out a few extra reps. But you should use them only for a very short amount of time like a few months. Overuse can be bad for your kidneys.
If you are unsure if the supplements have illegal substances, your best option is to go to your primary care manager at the health clinic with the ingredients, they can advise you if they are on the banned list and even tell you potential harmful substances, that may not be banned.

1SG (Join to see) I've been using different pre-workouts:
Jack3d (Micro), this is one of my favorites, got my dumbbell pr at 55lbs with it. It helps with vascularity too.
Neon, that's the worst that I've used, beside the itching I didn't feel any difference.
Cellucor C4, one of the most famous and the best that I've used. You feel the strength and the push. Definitely loved it!
BPI 1M.R. (1 More Rep), this is the one that I'm currently using and feels just like C4. I used them back to back and I just keep improving my PRs.
Protein Powder, I've used different brands too but my favorite, believe it or not, is the one that you find in the Commisary for like $18. Body Fortress, the Isolate. Is the cleanest and lowest in calories that I've used.
Iso100, great quality, taste and also low in calories and carbs.
Cellucor, my wife loves it because of the flavors variety but it is not as clean and low in calories as the other two I mentioned.
I was about to start a discussion of the same topic, now I'll start reading the rest of the responses.

The DoD has an entire program (it isn't well known) that list "safe" supplements and does third party testing of them to verify ingredients.

Your post is somewhat vague. Can you elaborate further? What are you currently taking? What do you want to take? What are your goals? There are tons of supplements from tons of companies all geared toward different things.

Sir,
Other then Whey, I am not supplementing yet. I am researching pre-work out power booster kinds of things, like NO, and Cellulor Extreme.
Since joining the Reserves, my APFT performance has barely met standards, averaging around 185. Early this summer, I decided I wanted to be better, do better. I trained more at a gym and in June scored 205, in October scored 238.
I have a WO packet in right now. When I make it as far as WOCC, I hope to be scoring at least 240s if not above 270s. So I am looking for artificial motivation through these products.
But, after talking to Sandy Annala, I am reconsidering supplements, other then Whey, altogether.

When I first joined the Military, I took every supplement I owned to my Primary Care Physician. He took the time and explained to me what was bad and what was good. I took that knowledge and expanded upon it. I suggest staying away from anything labeled "pre workout". NO Explode, Cellucor etc. Oh they will work and they will do what they say they will. However, you only get one heart. If you need something that that will help with endurance for the APFT or workouts in the gym. I suggest doing some research into BCAA's. Look into "Heed" by Hammer Nutrition, I strongly suggest sticking to all natural supplements. Believe it or not some are pretty good. Also, learn the difference between the different sources of protein- soy, whey, casein etc.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

I found that doing natural things work well. Maybe, not as good as some hyper supplement. I used to use my vitamix to blend fruits like berries and bananas. I used to throw in a few unroasted green coffee beans in for the caffeine boost. Than I would mix in protein powder. The caffeine is what give you the burst of energy. Berries and fruit have natural sugars that give you the right kind carbs that you to boost you insulin levels without spiking them, as well as berries have anti-oxidents that support cell generation. This allows for your muscles to get a gradual level of nutrients to feed them from the other vitamins and proteins.
The problem with some of the supplements are that they spike your insulin levels to high levels. Unless you are doing an aggressive workout they can actually be a detractor. Insulin can be your friend or enemy. It is the vehicle that puts nutrients in your muscles under load, but also can convert energy into fat if your not keeping your muscles at a demand. Some of the supplements even say don't take unless you are planning on doing a hard workout for specified amount of time. To get the full benefit you need to be constantly working different muscle groups without much rest. I see a lot of people in the gym do one exercise until all their sets are sets are complete, then move on to another exercise. The better thing to do is work one muscle hard than focus on another right away on another allowing the previous one to rest. Like for example, say you start the flat bench. As soon as one set is done then move to a back exercise like a bent over barbell row or something to that effect. Then maybe an ab workout keep a good rotation going so as to keep at least one muscle under load at all times.
These are some tid-bits I learned from a professional trainer who worked with pro body builders and those MMA fighters when I was living in Las Vegas.

One Thing You May Always Notice, Are The Disclaimers.....
"Here Try This".......
Then Goes On To State:
"This Product Is Not Intended To Diagnose, Treat, Cure, or Prevent Any Disease".
Makes Me Wonder Why It Just Doesn't Say: ..
"We Don't Know What This Stuff Does Either, But We Sell A Sh*t Load Of It".

These Items Appear To Be Manufactured To Assist You With Your "Floppy Driver."
~~~~ What The "L"; Ever Consider Giving It A Smack It With A Stick!. ~~~~
There's no way to know how any of them will effect you until you try them. Just do so during a non critical period so on the off chance that something does go wrong, you won't have to deal with the ignominy of explaining it to one of your superiors. From what I can tell, most of them are benign (caffeine is a drug), but some can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. Not a big deal unless you already suffer from those conditions.
So maybe this is an obvious question to some, but WHY are you considering using these "supplements?" There must be a good reason if you are considering putting chemicals into your body and do not even know if they are harmful or will cause you problems such as being popped positive. So, WHY 1SG (Join to see) are you even considering their use?
I started gong to a fitness center as part of a self-improvement regime, as well as in anticipation of warrant officer selection. I am already noticing improvement. While looking at protein powder I was drawn towards all the colorful workout supplements and promises of enhanced workouts and results.
That is why I asked the community's opinion. I am researching facts and myths and potential legal issues.
CMDCM Gene Treants
So I hear you saying you are improving your fitness without supplements, but looking for a faster, perhaps easier way to get fit. Got it.
With all due respect CMDCM Gene Treants, I don't think is an easier way to get fit. I do take supplements but they don't workout for me, they don't wake me up at 0430 so I can do PT on my own before PT formation. I think that what 1SG (Join to see) is looking for is an enhancer, something that helps him go a little further that what he already can do. There is people that don't use them, there's people that do and there is people that do it without even accepting it. I mean people that drink coffee before working out. Good evening Sir.
Working Out
Supplements
Ever since I went to Reserves, I do crap on my APFTs. Until the beginning of the summer, I was barely meeting standards, with scores around 185 or so. After working out with a trainer at a gym, I jumped to 205 in June and 238 in October.
If I have one motivating factor, it is my WO packet that is in play. I want to be scoring at least 240 while in WOCC. I appreciate the suggestions ma'am. (I just can't make my fingers type "Sandy" in this military forum)
Warmest Regards, Sandy
