From: The Bakersfield Californian

The man traveled to Bakersfield early Sunday in the belief he’d be spending time with the woman he loved.

But when he arrived at her south Bakersfield residence, three men wearing hockey masks punched, kicked and choked him to the point of passing out, according to police documents. The woman listened to the beating from a back bedroom.

The documents say the defendants — including Sergio Medina, the woman’s husband — are infantrymen in the U.S. Marine Corps. Medina, 20, Rodrigo Sanchez, 19, and Leonardo Ortiz, 19, have pleaded not guilty to charges including kidnapping with bodily injury and robbery, and are being held on $500,000 bail.

The victim was interviewed by police Sunday morning. He said he had arrived in the 2800 block of Lee Drive after receiving a Snapchat message from Diana Reyes, whom he met in 2012 and with whom he’d once been romantically involved.

The man said they talked often on social media about her marital troubles, according to the documents filed in Kern County Superior Court. She’d been trying to get him to come to Bakersfield, and he arrived at her home about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

When he parked nearby, he received a Snapchat message saying, “Come in the door is unlocked,” the documents say. The man entered the home and was approached by three men in hockey masks who immediately began beating him.

They forced him to the ground and bound his wrists with zip ties, the documents say. Then they placed a belt around his neck, and the man told police he struggled so hard to breathe he nearly lost consciousness.

The documents say one of the men, whom the others called “Sergio,” asked him what he was doing at the house. He told him he was there to meet Reyes, and Sergio asked if he knew she was married.

The man said he believed she was getting a divorce and he was in love with her. The men laughed at him.

They held him captive for about 30 minutes, and released him after taking items including his cellphone and wallet, the documents say. They threatened to kill him.

“We know where your family lives and have your driver’s license, so don’t go to the cops,” the man said his assailants told him.

The defendants and Reyes followed the man as he drove from the neighborhood, the documents say. The man eventually parked at a 7-Eleven near Real Road and punched his vehicle’s OnStar button for medical assistance.

Police were contacted after he was taken to a hospital with injuries including an orbital fracture with his left eye swollen shut, bruising to his head and entire body, and swelling to his head and neck. The documents say abrasions were visible on his wrists and neck.

Police soon stopped Medina in a vehicle, and found Sanchez and Ortiz at a residence in the 5500 block of Monitor Street.

Medina admitted to assaulting the man, and he helped police locate some of the stolen items, according to the documents. He told investigators he had already destroyed the man’s cellphone, and police found other items had been partly burned.

Reyes told investigators that Medina told her to stay in a back bedroom shortly before the victim arrived, the documents say. She said she heard the men pummeling the victim.

Reyes said she and the victim never had sex, but she once kissed him while her husband was on deployment, the documents say. She also told detectives her husband knows her Snapchat password.

Sgt James Carlton - I know only as to what has been reported like many others on this post, and I presume you too. And unlike your perspective, I have experienced some of my brothers and sisters throughout the many years who have demonstrated let's say a lack of good judgement. However, to have three of my Marines torture one person and get caught, yes a disgrace. Would my opinion have been different if it was one on one, most likely. I'm not oppose to a man standing up for his family. I have seen many a "West-Pac" widow, gallivanting while their husbands were deployed. I hated the "dogs" who would sniff around a fellow Marines' household. So I'm not oppose to a good ass beating. I am oppose to ganging up 3 on 1 and getting caught.

Sgt Spencer Sikder - Until the facts are not alleged, I stand with my Brothers. Let the headline be a message to any asshole thinking about having relations with a Marine's wife. Three on one, 40 on one, let it be known, the horror that can be brought down on any man looking to tempt a spouse away from a Marine. If our Brothers are found guilty, I know they'll take their punishment like men. If it were me, and I was found guilty, I'd understand. But Jody wouldn't have gotten away with anything. I guarantee, when I got out I'd kill him slowly and gladly go back to jail if I got caught'; gladly take the death penalty; life is hell and I was chosen to give Jody an education before he bought it. Then again, maybe I'd cut off his manhood and let him live and again willingly go to jail. Yeah, that sounds better. He'd suffer more. Good stuff!!

He should have just divorced her. What she did is nothing new, and won't be new. At least he didn't come home from a deployment to a kid who looks like the SDNCO from the battalion next door or some rare STD that can only be cured in Saturn's gravitational pull. Now three careers are gone and this clown gets the last laugh, though in reality she's already cheating on him too.

Yeah these Marines should fry. However if it were a "real" extramarital affair, I would agree that an ass whipping is required (but not to this degree).

SPC K Webb - Hence the quotation remarks around real. Yes emotional affairs are bad, but if the whore (I mean wife) is being truthful and all she did was kiss the guy and not f--k him, that's not as bad in my opinion.

Seriously? Three trained infantrymen trick an unarmed civilian into an ambush while wearing masks and you call that defending your honor!? Get the fuck outta here. You think a man is going behind your back with your wife and you feel you need to defend your pride/honor/whatever, show some real courage and confront him face to face, man to man and handle the situation. The actions of these boys showed nothing but cowardice and immaturity. Any legal action they have charged against them will be well deserved. No sympathy from me, whatsoever.

My ex-wife fucked around while I was overseas and I threw her out faster than a live frag after a 3 second count. Didn't give two shits about the guy because I didn't know him and he meant nothing to me. Letting yourself be controlled by misplaced anger just gets you in trouble.

You are right I am sickened by the responses on here saying this is ok, that they were Marines. Those who think this is justifiable are dirt bags and don't deserve to wear the uniform anymore. I served and wore my Uniform Proudly with honor. These Marines disgraced the uniform, the Corps, the Entire Military Establishment. Civilians dislike us, distrust us, and fear us, due to stupid actions by punks like these. Civilians think we are all like this cowards, who plot, ambush and assault unarmed, civilians while wearing masks. They deserve to be publicly shamed and branded as cowards. Which is exactly what they are. These guys don't deserve the title of Marine. If you put a scumbag & a coward in a uniform it's still a scumbag & a coward. Maybe these 3 punks would be better off applying to the KKK I hear they too like to run around in masks and assault people and threaten their families.

My thoughts exactly Spc Johnson. The many ugly opinions on this thread are pretty disappointing to me as a vet. What happened to the one v one fair scrap/fight? Bringing two other Marines with you to get Jody seems weak to me. I like MMA fighting, but I would like it less if it was three on one, just saying.

I don't like hearing about people getting hurt but, if this guy was knowingly sleeping with a Marines wife, let me repeat, a MARINE'S wife, he should have known he was playing with his life. Lucky to be alive really. If you plan on joining for only 3 or 4 years, ladies and gents, do as I did, and remain single the whole time. Cheating is much more prevalent in the military amongst the younger enlisted in my experience. God bless all.

Yes the Marines handled this wrong. Having an affair with another man's wife is wrong too. There is such a thing today that is called a divorce if you are in an unhappy situation. Two wrongs will never make a right. Also, having been stationed in Southern California myself, there are women who want to marry military men just to benefit from them and they sneak around and have affairs whenever possible. Matters of the heart can cause people to do terrible things. I would need a little more investigation to draw a just who all is guilty here and how to punish ALL those who did wrong.
