I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?

"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

Of course a 2lt should salute a 1lt. In fact a 2lt should salute another 2lt if he has a more senior commission date. Why would this even be a question?

Close, but not right. Position over commission date.

There isn't a whole lot of time separating lieutenants from different pier groups... 18 months at the most (nowadays). I'm not surprised if they don't salute each other outside of ceremony.

Position over commission. Do you want the SGT promoted from last month to listen to you promoted this month or do you want him to ignore you?

MSG John Wear III - I'm not in the Navy either Sarge. It is identical to the original question; should an O-1 salute an O-2?

In the time I served Lts did not salute each other. We considered each other as peers.

I suppose there is some truth in that. Apparently in your unit, LTs were all equal -- equally ignorant of military courtesy, equally ignorant of military regulations, and equally overpaid privates lacking any value to the military or the unit, not even a good grade of cannon fodder.

I cannot believe this is really a question, let alone an issue. Should a Ltd. Colonel salute a Colonel, they're both called Colonels. Or should a Lieutenant Junior Grade salute a Lieutenant, they're both called LT's. Or what about a Marine Caplain salute a Navy Captain. If these are the issues that are plaguing the military today, then I'm glad I have my DD-214

This isn't plaguing the military. It is just a random light hearted question
