Edit: I posted this as a little experiment. There was a similar discussion asking whether American soldiers would fire on American citizens due to the riots that were taking place. I had responded that the Posse Comitatus prohibited that, much like many of you did. However, I was unconvinced that most of the respondents "No's" had to do with an obligation to their fellow citizens and more to do with their dislike of the Obama administration. I hypothesized that it was the latter and posted this question to test that theory. Turns out you all pleasantly surprised me and proved me wrong. Thank you for that. I'm sure this post will continue to generate discussion though.

I really Doubt that the Marines that are in the inner circle to speak would allow that

A brigade sized USMC force was moved into Bolling AFB in DC in 1970. They were there as a contingency force for disorder in DC

Although the NDAA of 2012 declared everywhere US law has jurisdiction to be a "battlefield" and thus empowers the US Military to operate thereupon.

SFC George Smith, you might want to take a look at the Insurrection Act.

Should they, no. Can they, yes.

Think insurrection act. With approval from congress the president can use title 10 troops for law enforcement. It's not the often followed path and would be disastrous.

Title 32 national guard can enforce civil law under the consent of the governor of the state.

The previous discussion is central to the response during hurricane Katrina. Gov Blanco didn't want to give up her national guard to a centralized command thereby taking away her title 32 law enforcement. After a few hundred New Orleans police officers walked away she realized she needed to establish civil control. When she sent her request to the fed government all she said was, send me everything you got. Not quite what was needed. Hence the further delay. Bush could have used the insurrection act to take control but how would that of looked? We can what if it to death but it was a republican president that would have taken power from a female democrat governor.

It was a damned if you do and damned if you don't for both sides. Ultimately the people suffered.

Problem is, District of Columbia is not a State...so state militia does not apply. Thoughts.

The District does have National Guard troops, Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth, with some deliberate safety checks on the ability of the Mayor of the District to wield them the way Mayor Daley used the Chicago PD - deciding the results of the 1968 Democratic National Convention by controlling who was allowed to participate.
As to the "no state militia" bit, there is a whole lot of political philosophy behind the Founders' intent that the 10th Amendment should not apply to the seat of the national government.

Apparently he didn't really need to have any, PO1 William "Chip" Nagel, because he's been getting called a Nazi for a while now.

Would someone please clarify for me just how this particular question went from a general question to some bogus opportunity for PO Nagel to break out his little Nazi talking points?

I was stationed in Germany from 1969-1971 and met with Germans who were
World War II veterans in Adolf Hitler's Wehrmacht. What I learned from those
veterans was a wealth of information on Hitler's Nazi Germany. I was told about Nazi
Schutzstaffel (SS) Officers like Reinhard Heydrich, Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Eichmann
who were in charge of the Nazi death camps in Europe where millions of people were
murdered. Know the history of Adolf Hitler's German Third Reich Nazi party
and the millions of murders they committed before you call anyone a Nazi.

Some Americans continue to call other Americans a Nazi because of their different political beliefs. Look at the bio on these four men. Nazi party Fuhrer Adolf Hitler.
Nazi SS Officers Adolf Eichmann, Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich. These men
represent the Nazi ideology.
