Star Trek vs. Star Wars - to which universe do you belong?

Star Trek & Star Wars have dominated science fiction popular culture for decades. Each is distinct with little overlap and each possesses its own unique characters, locations, technologies and philosophies. Towards which universe to you tend to gravitate and why?

When I was a kid I was a "trekkie", I even went to conventions and met Q from the next generation in the bathroom after the event. It took me going to middle school to quickly realize that Start Wars is more socially acceptable for some unknown reason. So long story short I'm a Star Wars guy.

I would say that Star Wars beat Star Trek to the big screen by 2 years. The big in relation to the small screen lends credibility. So though Star Trek was around longer on T.V. our only association with Star Wars was the Big Screen. That is until the ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special on CBS almost succeeded in turning me off Star Wars completely.

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca. I grew up in the male dominated culture and generation of the Original Star Trek and the Original Battlestar Galactica . . . both of which had as their premise the old western series "Wagon Train to the Stars" where men were the action figures and women were merely supporting characters. As these series evolved in future incarnations (Star Trek in the Ghetto <Deep Space Nine> and Battlestar Galactica with James Almos) together with Babylon 5 and Firefly they became more philosophical, more broadly representative of diverse cultures and races, and far less misogynistic . . . so I liked them more for the purpose they served of providing more science, technology, engineering, and mutually supportive role models for children and younger men and women. Still, even in their original incarnations, they inspired thought and hope outside the cultural, resource, political, and opportunity limitations of the 1960s & 1970s. Warmest Regards, Sandy
p.s. For those who love deeply thoughtful and original conceptual Sci Fi the original Twilight Zone & Outer Limits cannot be beat. I will say the more modern Eureka (Mayberry RFD meets DARPA / General Dynamics) was funny and entertaining . . . though not so deeply political.

1LT Sandy Annala Eureka had to be the best new Sic Fi show for many years. Area 51 revealed and explained at last in a very pleasant way that entertained almost every week (minus the cartoon week).

Ok. I am a hardcore fan of the original BSG series, had all the toys and comics (and, admittedly, still have many of them), but [not] the new series and never will be! I agree with putting women in the leadership roles, hero roles and such in the new series, but I absolutely, vehemently, disagree with how they went about doing it, which is why I refused to watch the show.
I would have watched it had they have done it differently. They should have left the original characters as they were, instead of changing the original character's genders around (e.g. Starbuck & Boomer originally males - new series they're females) and personal preferences around to be politically correct with the times. They could introduce new female characters in leadership roles and it would have worked just as fine and it did (e.g. President Roslin).
I, and a [lot] of people I know who are hardcore BSG cannon fans did not like this and did not watch the series because of this. We would have been fine with writing [new] characters in (heroes, leaders and such) to fulfill these roles, but [not] messing with original cannon! This is [one major] reason this show lost [the majority] of its original fan base and it flopped; furthermore, the current generation of youth could not connect with the series, for various reasons! I know my kids did not watch, or like, it, nor did anyone they knew of at their school watch it, because of the same reason!
I can only hope they don't mess around with and muck up the Buck Rogers series that I loved to watch so much!

I am one of those guys who just couldn't watch the new series. I've heard it was good but I grew on BSG and loved the original. To me it would be like rebooting Star Wars with new actors playing the original parts. I'm huge fan of that whole wagon train to the stars. Give me the original Star Trek and BSG anyday.

Because the Star Wars is 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....' and Star Trek is just a bit in the future. FYI, been to Riverside IA.

I have been watching Trek since it first aired. The new movies opens it up to a whole new series if they wanted to. I expect to see several new movies though. Also if you look at the technology in the original series and look at what we have now you will see a lot of it coming true. One scientist once said "Todays science fiction is tomorrows science fact". So now we have cell phones and talking computers. Live long and prosper.
