I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

Depends on who says it. Most WW II combat vets saw more combat that I did, so I get humble.
Older civilian, I say "you are welcome"
Good looking single lady gets an opportunity to thank me.
For an 18 - 35 y/o male, I offer to take them to the Recruiter. When they say they are too good or important to serve, I bite my lip, chuckle, and walk away.

Keep it short is my suggestion… just simply reply back with, thank you for your support. Don’t going into detail about your service. Be humble and keep your service private

I usually respond simply with "Thanks". That being said, if it looks as if it could turn into a conversation of value, I like the idea of following it up with "it was an honor" or "it was my privilege to serve" (even though it may not have seemed like much of a pleasure at the time.) That last part I usually keep to myself, unless it's another vet!

I think it may make most of us a little uncomfortable. But then, it wasn't about our feelings.

Standard response: Thank you... And, Thank you for your continued support of our military.

My reply is, "Thank you, I appreciate that very much". And I do appreciate hearing it. Being a Vietnam Vet, it was many years before I heard that from anyone after I had served.

I feel grateful that I had the chance to serve and I value the time I spent in uniform so I usually answer: "Thank you for the opportunity."

I agree with MSgt Rivenbark. I feel humbled and all I can say is "Thank you for your support".
