I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

Over the years they have become just words people say. This is no longer the America I honorably served.

And So Sadly I Must Say "You're Absolutely Correct" .
I Was In The USAF From 06/1961 - 06/1965 ~
So I Too Have Watched This Country Shrink From What It Was
To What It Has Now Become ~~ And It's Pretty Damned Depressing
To Actually Be Around Having Seen It Doing So. ~ Very Much So.

IMO, its difficult to except thanks when you have been demeaned, insulted and attacked in this country as baby killers during and years after Nam! How many thank u's are really sincere and how many are just empty show. You'd have had to serve back in the 60s to really understand this. When people thank me for serving, in some ways it saddens and hurts. I'd almost rather not be thanked then to be reminded of the past. At times when being thanked, I think: "If they only knew what it was really like, returning not just with no honors, but absolute disdain. If you wore a military uniform, you could pretty much count on the coming insults. We should have been proud of wearing our uniforms and serving, but sadly that was not the case. So, for the most part, you can thank me by not thanking me.

That is why, when people thank me for my service, I answer back "appreciated" in an empty sort of way and just quickly move on!

I've Always Been Pizzed-Off Because Were Told About Our "Great Benefits" And To Be Sure To Use Them; Then We Have To Fight Like Hell & Argue With The VA To Get Those Great Benefits ~ And Rather Often We Get Tired Of Being Screwed With, So We Get Fed -Up With Their Crap And Just Toss In The Towel And Due Without Them.~ I'm Speaking BTW, From YEARS Of Experience... About 30 Of Them ~

I am disabled and had a few minor glitches with my claim, over all it took about 7 months for approval at 40% and declining health over the years I am at 100%. I find veterans usually are the problem, they do not supply the correct paperwork, have appropriate medical and service records available and the worse thing is a veteran that tries doing it on his own. DAV, American Legion, VFW will always help you free of charge.

It depends. Sometimes I say "thanks for noticing!" Usually I say "I was proud to serve." I like thanks for your support, too.

I thank them for their support, smile and say “You were worth it.” That usually brings a look of surprise and a smile to their face.
