I keep running into issues where I'm barred from taking certain actions advised by the instructor from sniper school. Our section is currently getting left behind in respect to training as the main focus goes towards the line company. Does anyone have experience with this problem or advice on getting top to loosen up on the reigns a bit?

Do you have an OIC that could take up the issue with the company commander? Have you discussed the training issues with the company training O/NCO to get them on board? Have you had a dialog with the 1SG where you've outlined your needs along with a plan to implement the required training, etc.? Sometimes going to a leader with a solution in hand as opposed to just a wish list helps sway the discussion in your direction.

Sir, how would you suggest going about discussing this with top? I've tried bringing them training schedules for a drill weekend and showing them several different SOPs in regards to our equipment and I've even coordinated cross training with our fisters and medics. But disappointingly theses all get shot down every time. We get very limited training time and when we do get time it appears they would prefer I have my guys playing on their cell phones over allowing us to draw out equipment to get some sgts time.

@SGT Chase Mckissick This maybe something that is coming from both him and the Co CDR, though it doesn't make sense. Only thing I can think of is they don't believe in the scout/sniper role or don't have trust in the section leadership. Yes NG training time is limited and you need every second. While I've seen my share of and had to at times rubber stamp mandatory training distractors (parades, inspections, command visits, etc.) because of orders, I never stopped a section from specialized training like it appears you are running up against.

You guys have a perishable and necessary skill that needs to be exercised. OK, you've brought it to the company level training meetings and been denied repeatedly. Do you have this documented - dates for rejection and reasons? Once you have this and have presented it professionally and tactfully to the CO, if he isn't coming on board then I would ask the company commander for an meeting with the battalion training officer/NCO. Is this happening Bn wide in other companies? If yes this may be an issue at the Bn Cdr level, if no, get the Bn leadership on board and see if they can emphasize the need for your training at the Co level. Again PROFESSIONALLY. The goal is not to mutiny on Top but to get command emphasis passed down to him regarding your training requirements. He may not agree but if it's coming from the top he should have to obey the directive. On the flip side watch your six. you don't want this coming back as retaliation on an NCOER or in other ways. You have to have 100% documentation with all the "I"s dotted and "T"s crossed and all the permission slips stamped especially if your Company CofC is not fully on board.

Sir I'll start documenting any meetings on the subject, thanks. And I believe much of the problem is coming from the BC. I think he's lost faith in the section due a few bad eggs that were currently trying to get rid of. The section used to be trusted to do their own thing. But I think a few individuals believed this gave them special priviledges which lead to a poor image of the section as a whole.

That may be a tough one to crack SGT (Join to see) at that level. But if he's a BC worth his salt, he knows he needs your skills and if you can show him a program that will either remove the bad eggs or bring them into the fold again along with the cooperation from and coordination with the other sections you spoke of, you might get a chance to get your training back.

Given that the 1SG is beans, bullets, admin, etc. as long as training is being conducted to standard he may be out of his lane. The first question I would ask is if your unit has an operations section. If so, this would be the advisable avenue. OPS works directly for the commander and is responsible for all aspects of training (to include reviewing SOPs for the commander). It's hard for an 11B5M to not get into the weeds in a line unit...he IS the TOP, but it's part of the CO & XOs responsibility to ensure everyone stays in their lane as much as possible.

It's always good to get the staff or experience SM (team leaders) together and establish a plan and present it to a town hall meeting or NCO meeting where he can be present.. And have an indirect conversation about it so his reputation doesn't get tampered with. This also him to see what's on the instructors mind.. Often in our air assault school house we had the course coordinator with us and discuss new options that could reduce for example injuries, new gear etc..to re-evaluate the training intent.

Thanks Harris, now that you mention going at it with the other team leaders in an indirect manner does make sense.
