Is this a sound political and strategic move or will it spark even deeper division between the Palestinians and the Jewish state? Thoughts?

Sp4 Byron Skinner. The repercussions to this absolutely stupid act by President Trump will cause a lot ofPalestinians and Israelis to get killed. The only hope the US has that maybe the military chain of command is not a but ass dumb as the Civilians and keep US troops out of this blood bath that is building.

The problem is that this moves means that the United States can no longer be an honest broker in the middle East peace process (such as it is), because we have demonstrably taken sides.

Taken sides? By moving our embassy to the capital of a nation we recognize? We have our embassy in every other capital city, save for Israel. We had taken sides before Trump made good on Clinton, Bush, and Obama's promise. The only difference is now instead of siding with the muslims we sided with Israel.

We’ve been siding with Israel since, oh, about 1948 when it was created. So what make you think anyone will take critical notice now?

Been hashed back and forth for years, finally have a president with balls enough to do it. The capital should be in Jerusalem. And our embassy should be in the capital.

this reminds me of a little story,
TO WHOM DOES THE LAND OF ISRAEL BELONG
An Israeli sense of humor at the united nations set the record straight.
An ingenious example of speech and politics occurred recently in the united nations assembly and made the world community smile
A rep. from Israel began: Before beginning my talk I want to tell you something about Moses. When he struck the rock and it brought forth water, he thought , What a good opportunity to have a bath !"
Moses removed his clothes, put them aside on the rock and entered the water. When he got out and wanted to dress , his clothes had vanished. A Palestinian had stolen them !
The Palestinian rep. at the UN jumped up furiously and shouted, What are you talking about ? The Palestinians weren't there then.
The Israeli rep, smiled and said, now that we have made that clear I will begin my speech.

Probably about the same as when President Truman recognized Israel as a Nation. It is something which should have been done long ago, but most of our former Presidents, who promised to do so were blowing smoke up our A$$.

President Truman made the point of *not* recognizing Jerusalem as part of Israel. It was suppose to be an open city run by an international committee so one religion would never again dominate the area, resulting in other religions groups fighting to gain access to their holy sites, as had be the practice for the past several thousand years.

CPO (Join to see) - I never said he recognized Jerusalem, I said he recognized Israel as a State/Nation and for this he received the same warm welcome. As for Israel deciding where their capital should be is up to them. Every other country the U.S. Embassy is in the Capital, so it is about time.

Apples and Oranges SGM. What a foreign country decides to do and what the U.S. decides to do (or recognize) are two very different things. Sure, Israel could claim their capital is in Cairo, Egypt, but that does not mean the U.S. needs to recognize that claim.
In recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, we have handed them the city as theirs when it is not. Evangelicals may celebrate this, but there are already efforts to evict Christians from the holy city.

SGM Mikel Dawson - "They"? Look at this country. There is a lot of "we" and "us" that fits your bill. The U.S. has the same damn problems but far fewer sacred cows for the extremists to fight over. Christians have long proclaimed a 'my way or the highway' stance and persecuted, banished or killed those that did not abide by the particular Christian sect of the ruling power.

SGM Mikel Dawson - Well the biggest problem is just that little word: RESPECT. If we can not respect each other for the way we think, live and believe, then there is noting. One of the biggest problems in the world as a whole.

MAJ Montgomery Granger
Yet until we dipped into European affairs for good during and then after WWII and the Marshall Plan, that place was erupting with violence and wars continuously. After WWII we STAYED and are still in countries we defeated over 72 years ago. They are now among the most peaceful and prosperous nations on earth, not in spite of US but because of US. If after we pacify Iraq and Afghanistan we STAY and then lead a coalition to a Middle East Marshall Plan, they too, will be among the most peaceful and prosperous nations.

SP5 Larry Morris - Would you mind reading the headine of that news article from the Guardian again, please. Your reply does not seem to correspond with the other group of "low lifes" <sarcasm> that are crying about their treatment by Israelis.

Initially, No, I don't think it is sound. That written, I am certainly no expert on the ages-old political firestorm that is the Middle East, but my first thought/question is, "what is the benefit to the USA"? What do we stand to gain from making this announcement that we didn't already have in place?
Like many, I think initially it will cause conflict: To what extent is unknown. USA and related entities (people, buildings, business, etc) may see stepped-up targeted attacks throughout the region. The USA's ability to more or less navigate diplomatically, to claim middle-man mediator status, will take a hit since the move will be seen as the USA unilaterally siding with Israel on an issue of great religious importance to both sides. The Peace Process, what little of it existed, will most likely grind to a halt, and in area historically rife with it, we may actually see an increase in tension as both sides grapple with the news.
I hope I'm wrong, I hope that it actually causes the right people to say "WTF, it kind was anyway, so let's get on with trying to figure a way out of this power keg before it blows".

The PLO has seldom, if ever, been cooperative with Israel. I say let them eat dirt--the hard way if necessary. It's a long time overdue.

Don't see any Peace in the region for along time to come after this move. Maybe we should just let them all figure it out for themselves and concentrate on America First!

Gotta remove ourselves from the Arab oil teet first. Yes, we can (and should) pump our own oil, but for some dumb reason we choose not to. Until that day comes, we stay there cuz were we to leave, they would all move on Israel and Israel would more than likely nuke them all.

MSgt Robert "Rock" Aldi - Incorrect. You can read my other posts for a more detailed history, but Israel was the aggressor in 1967 and invaded Egypt. They committed a Pearl Harbor type of attack and when it was obvious to the world that Israel was lying they then claimed it was preemptive self-defense. Extremist French Socialists were essentially who gave Israel the bomb, but the reason France stopped providing arms to Israel following the 1967 war was because Israel was the aggressor. The Arabs caught Israel flat footed in 1973 and Israel would have lost that war without the incredible emergency support of Nixon/Kissinger (Operation Nickel Grass). Israel then violated the cease fire by continue their invasion and finalizing their encirclement while under a white flag. The mythology of Israel does not stand up to much scrutiny.
