What are you doing individually or within your group or command to continue your growth as a leader?

When you transition what will you do to continue that development? If you have transitoned already what are you doing now?

Does is stop because you have left the military

I continually teach leadership to youth in the Boy Scouts. I have attended Woodbadge for scout leaders. Since retirement I have received my MBA, and I am working toward a doctorate in business administration with a concentration in organizational behavior and leadership. I find that continued education and developing leadership skills will give us the ability to pass our knowledge along to the younger generations. If we don't teach them, they will teach themselves, and we can see how that has worked with millennials.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs outside the usual PME and OPD I try to attend at least one course every year, continue civilian education, and try to read when I am not in school to learn from others and their experiences.

Since my retirement eleven years ago I have been teaching a bunch of ninth and tenth graders about biology. Like the military it has its challenges and rewards. As a teacher I have attended workshops and seminars that specifically target the aspects of being a better teacher. I am currently attending night school so that I can receive a master's degree in educational leadership with principal certification. This degree will afford me the opportunity to impact more students in a positive way.

Train them to do your job. That will make them better and you can take a nap

There are many volunteer groups that need qualified trained leaders. I have been working with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for over 25 years now. Great program with both youth and adult opportunities. I have worked with the cadet side of the program and have continued to sustain my leadership skills and instill them in the cadets I work with. The youth and their optimism help me stay current on new ideas and ways to view situations.
The organization is also very involved in Emergency Services in the way of Search and Rescue of persons and aircraft and assisting with recovery operations after natural disasters. CAP conducts nearly 90% of all search and rescue of downed aircraft within the continental United States. We also assist Homeland Security operations.
There are many other such programs and organizations that can greatly benefit from what we as veterans have learned especially in the way of leadership and teamwork.

COL Mikel Burroughs--- We will just about all reach that point in life where we have no one to lead. Not much else to prove. You then transfer your priorities to something else. Mine is my family and I help when called upon. I am inot one to get in their business unless I see something going to hell. Willing to help if called upon, but I have found out family gets a little bossy the older I get. But they care and and they are concerned about me. I am not up to longs travel anymore and if I did when I got there it would be a pain getting around. I had a Doctor tell me once that my Mom had a better chance to Make it to 100 than I did. She was a lot closer, she lived until she was 97.You have a great day Sir.
