What are you prepared to do in the event of a mass shooting?

As shooting incidents seem to become more frequent what have you prepared yourself and your family to do should you ever be involved with an 'active shooter' in a public place? I have a friend (single mom veteran) who will be transferring to an online college program rather than risk dealing with a loner-loser who might 'go off' in a classroom? Suggestions on how best to prepare? Google 'bulletproof blankets' which are available for students.

Mass Shootings are "Statistically Unlikely" and are being portrayed in such a fashion as to cause mass hysteria, to promote a political agenda.
As I have said in other threads, Mass Shootings are not Criminal in nature. They are (generally speaking) the result of Mental Health (Medical) or Ideological issues. Simply put, you cannot account for Crazy.
Now all that said, Gen. Mattis said it best.

‘Emotionally Exhausted’ Marine's Plan Kills Everyone He Meets
It's the only correct way for a true Marine to behave.

"Statistically Unlikely".
If you think about it, that doesn't make any sense as written.

Fortunately I live in a Constitutional Carry state where both my wife and I are prepared to protect ourselves then help others. We discuss 'what if' scenarios to enhance our situational awareness.

This pithy comment after listening to the shooter's father being interviewed and from another news website says it all:

Oregon Shooter’s Father Says What Could Have Prevented His Shooting Rampage: ‘What Right Do You...
The father of the 26-year-old who went on a shooting rampage at an Oregon community college apologized to the families of the victims Saturday as well as called for stricter gun control. Ian Mercer told CNN's Ryan Young that his son, 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer, "will always be remembered...

Excellent advice, SSG Gentile. My dad loved model railroad sets, so I can imagine how many hours of time and sentiment you must have invested beyond just 15 years.

Truth is I wished this had been a possible multiple answer. We most all would like to think we would do what was necessary. And I do believe I would. However, I can't say that 100%... But I still would not be caught without a gun today....

SSgt Terry P. - I will agree 100% on that one. Its like the old saying we are combat ready. My eye we are combat ready, there will never be enough training to ever be ready for every situation. Most of us vets havent done anything in years and Im not sure how much most have retained. I keep myself up on my 9mm and know I could take a target out with ease, but thats a stationary target that isnt shooting back at me either. Im not a spring chicken either...more like a broken down old turkey.

SGT Michael Glenn - Yep I don't move near as fast as I did 30 years ago and I dare say my hand and eye coordination isn't near what it was as when I was on the pistol tean at ft Carson

I think that a person really doesn't know what they would do until confronted with that situation. I'd l like to think that I'd at least die trying to help others.

It all depends on the situation and if I see a way to neutralize the threat without causing further chaos, and do it fast, the longer one waits the fewer chances there are.

That's why is so important to Pray once you're out of bed, 'cause you don't know when the Lord is going to call you Home. I can't run much anymore so I guess I'll duck and hide preferably above the shooter and then look for something to throw at him from above. All along I'll be doing my prayers in case is my day to go home.

As I am currently working in law enforcement as a patrol supervisor, I plan on moving to the sound of the guns and stopping the threat. We are living in dangerous times and we need to all be prepared to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.

I share your 'trained instinct' after over a decade of law enforcement service. Thanks for being out on the front lines for us. My intent in creating this post was to raise awareness and preparation for when evil appears.

As a licensed concealed carrier and well trained I would close with the shooter while taking cover/concealment and direct folks to safety while trying for a well placed kill shot.

I also have a CCW, but here in Texas everyone has a gun. I only carried mine a few times but I make sure that when I go to town I wear my depends. Never can tell when they may become necessary.

MGySgt George W Iliffe Jr - I would have to say nearly everyone has a weapon here as well. You don't see mass shootings in either place. I guess when you KNOW everyone is packing it makes you have second thoughts about starting something you won't get a chance to finish! :D

I hope this is what you would do but remember that everything changes when contact is actually made and we only really know what we think we would do, until we actually do it.

MSG Brad Sand - That's true. But a guy has to have something to act on. That's why we train our troops until it becomes muscle memory. I hope it never comes to that, but if it does I hope folks will act.

If you found yourself in a situation where you are carrying, probably a hand gun, and you want to take on some armed ass hyped up on how easy "Gears of War" is, you have to factor in what happens when the police arrive. Because they will shoot you on sight.

Nice to get some votes up, and it is definitely a thing. Hopefully you can dispatch or disarm some anti-social perp before he hurts someone, but when you see the blue lights or hear the sirens, you better divest -yourself- of fire arms instantly.
That really is another facet of responsible gun ownership.

Excellent point. My CCW 7-hour training covered the legal, psychological, and practical aspects and what you should tell the 911 operator during an active shooter situation. I recommend anyone wishing to CCW take such a course of training.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you may shoot the worst perp there ever was and it might haunt you. Maybe not, but another thing to consider.

OKay, below is a video of how the police shot the 12 YO kid up in Cleveland who had what turned out to be an airsoft pistol.

If you are on the scene when an active shooter is reported, you better not look like a shooter.

I carry so would be prepared. If the bad guy thinks he can shield himself just give me an inch, anything. I'll put a .45 cal hollow point through it. I practice daily, 6 years military and am prepared for an event like this if that's possible.

Thanks for caring enough to practice and to being as prepared as one possibly can given fluid circumstances.

CPO Andy Carrillo, MS - I do care enough, my wife practices with her Walther PPS 9mm, it's a nice military black and green. Little small for my hands. I save a little by buying range ammo but we pay for it in our nightly cleanings. She's so cute, we were headed out west and crossing into KC, Kansas one day was the Cabela's Mother Ship, it was huge! I told her, Whatever you want hon. She bought a Cabelas labeled steel case complete gun cleaning kit and an extra bottle of nitro. Is that great or what?

I have his 'n' hers Walther PPC's and we love their ergonomics. My wife still prefers her Ruger Mk III .22 bull barrel target pistol with holographic sight. She shoots quarter-sized groups at 15 yds. She's spoiled...
