Dickson County public schools in Tennessee has elected to ban all flags after a summer of controversy with the confederate flag. All flags would include "Old Glory".

Okay, there is one flag in this Country that should not be offensive to anyone, the American flag. If you find it offensive......leave ! This band is offensive to me.

I dont know but i cant remember one time in high school when i just brought an american flag to school. What would the purpose be as long as its on the flag pole at the entrance to the school whats the problem.

Here's one problem: the school leadership is stripping away your personal rights. Let's modify the scenario a bit. Let's suppose you're a big football fan and during the week leading up to the Army - Navy game, you want to display a Navy flag on your car. That would be prohibited at this school. Or, let's pretend that you have a little sister who attends that school. At some point you get deployed to the middle east and get captured by ISIS. Your little sister wants to display a POW flag on her car in remembrance of you. That too would be prohibited. I could go on, but I hope you get the point. One school official is stripping away your personal liberties.

That's rediculous and disgusting. When citizens ban the display of the symbol of their nation they are turning their back on their nation. I'd like to see the entire student body carry an American flag openly in opposition to this policy.

I bet you can display another county's flag with no problem.

I am flabbergasted this is the symbol of America. As so eloquently presented by others we used to pledge to this flag but that offended someone because of the words contained in the pledge. So the solution is ban all flags, really. We who serve and have served fight for and defend this flag and now a school has banned it.

The school district also posted a statement on its website:

Information reported by news stations that the American Flag has been banned in the Dickson County school system is entirely inaccurate. The Flag is prominently displayed at every school in our county. It is also displayed in many of our classrooms. All students in Dickson County are allowed to voluntarily participate in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. We are very proud to have JROTC in both of our high schools, and we will continue to fly and respect the flag.

Certainly the school is now backpedaling after making national headlines.

I don't think they are "backpedaling" at all - there are no names in the article and it says "School leaders are..." etc - that "School leader" might be the janitor or a class president who think they know everything. There is no evidence the "ban" ever took place! How is that "backpedaling"? Seems more to me like stating the truth in the first place.

Dickson County Tennessee Director of Student Services Steve Sorrells is the primary source of information. He is the senior educator in that county. The policy was implemented based on some actions and behaviors of students displaying banners behind a vehicle. This originated from controversy over the Confederate flag this summer. Ultimately, a blanket policy was put in force prohibiting all flags. So, if your child wanted to drive his vehicle to school with an American flag affixed to it, that would be prohibited. That is the policy. Now that the school has made national headlines, they're having to deflect and defend their policy. This is not a good policy.

I didn't see anything saying that Steve Sorrells changed his mind or the "policy" to align with the County - but I'm assuming the County wins here. If anything, Steve Sorrells has some backpedaling to do! Thanks for the clarification!

Man I you have to be kidding me Banning Old Glory is against everything that is American. If my child got kicked out of school for having the American Flag I would be having a conversation with the superintendent.

Burn them, not the flag, but the people trying to ban our Stars and Stripes. (figuratively, not literally)
