After reading the recent uniform board changes for the Air Force and the way they decided the changes, I’ve come to one conclusion—“…the inmates are running the asylum…” Some of the changes are good; however, most of them are ludicrous. A few of the changes are: [1] “…allow airmen to wear morale patches on certain days, [2] put hands in their pockets, [3] tattoo their scalps as part of an upcoming revision to dress and appearance standards and [4] allow airmen with piercings to wear transparent spacers, so their piercings don't close up…” What is your view of the recent changes? I love the Air Force Tiger Suit and the 12 in boot. They look like soldiers, where the Army look like piles of laundry. The blue stripes on the sleeves are sharp too. If you allow them to put their hands in pockets hundreds of E-9s will be out of work.

If they seriously wanted them to stop, they would remove the pockets

SSG Edward Tilton - You raise an interesting point. Why do all the branches of the military spend the time and money to decide what sort of pockets uniforms should have if you are never supposed to use those pockets? Why do so many military uniforms have pockets with a specific place for a pen if you are never supposed to put a pen in the pen slot? Those pockets all cost money, the cost of pockets on one uniform might be small, but considering the millions of uniforms that the military buys clearly they could save a lot of money by just eliminating the pockets (at least the front pants pockets and the pockets on jackets).

SSG Edward Tilton - I did that when I was NCOIC of the Rifle Detail on Honor Guard for my Detail Uniforms, not on my Fatigues or other daily uniforms.

I never served in the Air-force, and while their changes are looser than the Army’s most recent changes it is to be expected in our current environment. As many have said before me, after serving over 30 years I chose to retire so I don’t get a vote, I do feel sorry for how we will all look on a parade field. Joint commands will pull their hair out.

Troops put their hands in their pockets anyway. Not that big of a deal. And for anyone who tries to tell me it's about discipline or professional image, eh not really. Some things aren't that serious.
