RP Members and Connections I found this picture very interesting and thought I would create some discussion. What are some of the things we can actually do without Government Permission?
Serve our Country in the Military? (Need permission, right?)
Is our Government too involved in our Freedoms and Rights?
Taking Drugs for me meant prescription drugs!
Your thoughts & comments are welcome.

We can pretty much do anything we want without permission...doing it legally or without repercussions or regulations is another story altogether!

Yeah. It's the getting caught that sucks -- so I hear. Kind of like it isn't the 5,000 foot free fall with a faulty canopy that kills you -- it's the sudden stop at the end.

I don't know that we can do anything we want without permission. Isn't getting registrations, permits and licenses asking for permission? You need a license to fish, drive, marry, etc. Then the government tells you, you now need insurance to drive, no insurance, no driving. You need a permit for a gun, where in the Constitution does it state you must have a permit, register your weapon and be licensed to carry? I do understand that this countries demographics have drastically changed. People are allowed in without being vetted, criminal records checks or medical examinations. Those who have allowed this to happen do not live in the real world or among those they have allowed to invade. You need to licensed to do hair, own a bar or restaurant, be a physical therapist, a mental health therapist and so on. So just exactly how free are we? Let me just clarify I would want to know that the person cutting my hair or giving me therapy is qualified but doesn't years of schooling qualify a person?

I do not think there are too many government laws. I think there are way too many Federal Government Laws. Our country was founded to make states responsible for the majority of the laws with only the Feds stepping in when the Constitution was not being upheld, controlling interstate commerce, or when dealing with issues that pertain to the safety and security of the nation as a whole. I am in complete agreement that NY City can make Big Gulps illegal. I have a problem with the Federal Government telling us what our children are learning.

Whatever you and I were before we met Uncle Same we were during and after our service to our Country! Sadly the other was and is so! One day I picked up a small paper back book at a Car Wash the title was "Core Values" by a Marine! It just sounded like what my mother and older brother taught me while we were growing up!!! Now I try and teach those same values to All THE CHILDREN THAT PASS THROUGH BROADWAY GYMNASTIC SCHOOL in Los Angeles, Ca.

I agree but living in Southern California, which is in a very liberal California, I disagree with the states having the power no CCW's (Carry Concealed Weapons Permits) no AR's and no high cap magazines. Too Many state laws. If you are a business in California the owners/ managers are guilty until proven innocent and they will fine you for everything.

I disagree. There are too many STATE and FEDERAL laws. While the Constitution was designed to give certain powers to the states there does need to be some way to balance it all out. The logic behind Big Gulps was stupid/non-existent. Too much sugar makes you fat so you can't buy a 40 oz cup of soda at 7/11 BUT you can walk to the refrigerator section and buy a 64oz bottle? The assumption is that you would share the bottle...who says you aren't sharing the cup? People have been arrested for obscure rarely enforced laws simply because they could. I think that for every law enacted they should search their records and delete 2 inane ones.

Sadly, what Bush II's first "czar" for faith-based initiatives, John DiIulio (he resigned after about 8 mos.), a political scientist by profession, wrote years back remains gospel: whatever was not under the purview of government & comes under the purview of government remains under the purview of government; or words to that effect.

Here's a few people don't even think about till they get arrested for it.
Leaving children at home under a certain age. Depends on State
Buying miners perminant marker or spray paint! CA
Friendly bets over $2000! All States
Getting lost on Federal land! All States
Using ensecure wifi. All States
Oral sex! CA
Eating chicken with a fork! GA
Private Citizens may personally arrest anyone disturbing church services! MS
Milking another persons cow? TX
The penalty for jumping off a building is death!?.... NY (you think....lol)
It is illegal to have sex in the back of an ambulance if it is responding to an emergency call! UT
Lol... just random laws out there! I usually look up current laws of states I'll be traveling to just so I don't arrested for possibly milking someone else's cow in the event I get thirsty going through Texas....lol... enjoy! Lol...

There are laws on the books throughout all states that are outdated. Like it is illegal to walk your duck without a leash and when coming to a 4 way intersection you are to get out of your car and fire your shotgun in the air to notify other drivers of your location (at an intersection).

Actually we can do or attempt to do anything without government permission COL Mikel J. Burroughs, We make decisions and live with the consequences.
I am free in Christ for eternity.
In the present I am limited by physical limitations. I feel less encumbered now that I did a month ago thanks to the peaceful transition of national power from POTUS 44 to POTUS 45.

The soldiers today know that their Rules of Engagement are going to keep them safer than the one I got from stateside back in '67-'68 when I was on guard duty hoping that a satchel charge would not be thrown in our bunker that night! When I got to the Bunker and met the other guy pulling Guard Duty with me that night and we talked for a moment about one of our Brothers that got killed the night before going HOME!! I SAID I HERE SOMETHING I AM GOING TO SHOOT! YOU SEE I had set up the claymores myself near the Rolls of Cons tine wire! NO MANDS LAND! SO I say to my Buddy if I here something out there I am going to shoot! He said oh no YOU CANT I JUST GOT ORDERS FROM THE SGT. OF THE GUARD! HE SAID HE HAD ORDERS FROM STATESIDE THAT WE CANNOT SHOOT UNLESS WE ARE SHOT AT!!! I waited a moment and looked at him and said that means! He said I know HE HAS TO MISS YOU OR ME!!! THANKS JANE FONDA!!! WILLIAM BILL ARES!!!! OH WELL IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO! BUT I WILL REMEMBER "RULES OF ENGAGEMENT" ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE!!! ALL GOOD!

To me freedom doesn't give you permission to do whatever you want. Freedom is a responsibility to act and react within certain boundaries. Yes i agree that our government has overstepped it's vision of responsibility in some areas but then we have people who a just complete idiots who cannot seem to use self control

Unfortunately, man has a will, and we will never be able to control his will, even if it is evil. No amount of punishment will deter the true evil will of man. All scientist, psychologist, physiologist, and medical doctors, have never, and never will find a way to control the will of man. This is a task that only God can handle.

There is nothing new here.... except possibly the level of tyranny....John Adams said " Happiness of society is the end of government intrusion in our lives" Ronald Reagan said "The first duty of government is to protect society not run society" ..... Martin Van Buren said "The less government interferes with private pursuits the better for the general prosperity" Our nation has always suffered from government "over reach".....for me the ultimate example was when the US government decided how much water I could use in my home to flush my toilet. It not only exemplifies the most basic violation of my rights and life .....but the general stupidity of government and that intrusion.....they passed that regulation to "conserve water"....even where there is an abundance of water .....AND now I must flush twice to clear the toilet WASTING MORE WATER... The best government is the government that governs least..... but the nature of government is to never lessen their power and intrusion but increase it...... we could take 90% of government regulations and revoke them and the nation would be better off and happier.....only politicians would shed a tear
Milton Friedman...." The government solution is usually worse than the problem"

Actually, it is, relatively speaking, new. Liberalism ushered in the age of the Nanny State.
The Income Tax gave the Federal State of the United States of America unprecedented power over the US Citizen. This all started in 1913.

In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted allowing the Federal Government to directly tax the people. Thus was born the Income Tax. Taxation of a person’s labo…

Freedom, true freedom is an illusion and a bad thing. In the state of nature, there is a rough equality but there is the continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short (Hobbes, Leviathan). So there needs to be rules (laws) to prevent that. Many governments (ours included) takes things a bit too far. When I think of freedom and liberty, I am not thinking in absolute terms. I am thinking of freedom to pursue my vision of the good within the constraints of the society that I live in. The alternative is not at all something that we would want. Just watch a few episodes of the Walking Dead to get an idea (just pretend the zombies aren't there).

SSG David Kaelin - I've done some studies on religion myself, although I would claim no scholarly titles. What I've found is that Muslims will kill you for your lack of worshiping their god, and Christians will try to share with you the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose message was love. Jesus came not to condemn but to love and to intercede. Some who call themselves Christians may judge you for your non-belief and say you're damned to hell but they're not the Judge and have no authority in the afterlife. I don't have anything to prove my belief that Christ came to reconcile my sin with God except a collection of books which I also believe is the inspired Word of God. However, we also have no proof that animals and humans evolved from soupy seawater. Sure, there's theories but they're just that. Theories. The belief in evolution comes down to a system of faith. Some arguments for evolution seem compelling on the surface but upon further scrutiny, there are many inconsistencies. The message of Christ is simple: love one another and love God the Creator.
As far as the Constitution's First Amendment, the Founding Fathers recognized that their entire value system was based on that of the Judeo-Christian faith (their correspondence to each other and other publications will confirm as much). They also recognized that mankind was created with free will and determined that coercing citizens to patronize a religion established by the government (such as the Church of England at the time) was against these values they held dear. No successful government could be founded on a system without a value system that holds that human life is sacred. Look to Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler. Those guys failed miserably. The Founding Fathers passed on a moral code that embraced human life as important and the US has thrived as a result. It is only after the erosion of Judeo-Christian values in the last 60 years or so that we as a nation have seemed to falter.

SSG David Kaelin - Actually if you read the entire Constitution, to include the very last entry there is a very interesting statement at the very bottom after Article 8. I always found that entry interesting. In addition Jefferson.s Declaration of Independence also has some interesting entry's for a man who was said today that he was a Deist.

My wife is an attorney who worked overseas in former Soviet bloc countries, helping them bring their codes into contemporary US and European practice.
One thing she learned was that European and US law principles differ in one critical way. In Europe, if the law does not specifically allow something, it is presumed to be illegal. In the US, if it isn't specifically prohibited, you can knock yourself out. One EU lawyer asked her why the US is so different. The answer, historically, is that America is packed with former Europeans who didn't like the top-down legal and social structure.
This goes for a lot of things. We're a collection of the world's misfits, troublemakers, and individualists. If we weren't, why would we be complaining about all this?

It also falls back to our FF, if the states didn't specifically give the federal government authority for something, it was a states rights. If the people of that state didn't give the state authority, it was the peoples right. That is the problem with countries that are NOT by the people and for the people.

SPC Randy Torgerson - 9th and 10th Amendments are quiet specific in that regard, I wish more Politicians would read those two as well as the First and Second. I often tell people to read James Madison's Proposed Amendments of June 8, 1789 as he proposed to the First Session of the First Congress (http://www.patriotpost.us/historical documents)

Our FF understood rights do not come from government...therefore, govt can only do what the people allow them to. Rights come from God...gov is meant to secure thise rights, not author.them.

Well, this is a critical philosophical problem. The Constitution was a product of the Enlightenment, and regarded rights as defined by God or by natural philosophy (that is, it makes sense to educated minds). If neither is recognized, then a Right becomes a right, merely a privilege granted by the State. People who think this through find the idea frightening; those who do not have no problem defining anything they like at a given moment as a "human right." By this logic, Internet access is a human right, for all the good that does for starving people who have neither food nor WiFi access.
