What do you think of Trump's demand that CNN contribute GOP debate profits to Veteran's groups?

Donald Trump has demanded that CNN contribute ten million dollars of the profits from the upcoming GOP debate to Veteran's groups. Is it a real gesture of goodwill toward the Veterans of the United States, or just a lot of self-serving grandstanding?

I believe Trump is a genius when it comes to promoting a product, be it himself or his latest business venture. If CNN tells him no and he doesn't show up, they look bad and Trump simply needs to hope that this debate continues to cast most of the candidates in a poor light. If he participates and does well, he can point to the issue and say that he once again overcame hostile debate moderation and came out a winner. If he does poorly, he can blame the network while taking credit for the money CNN donated. The only thing he can't allow, is for his candidacy to be ignored.

Trump's never met a problem he couldn't buy his way out of. I just think it's funny that the military community lost its collective mind when Tom Cruise and Kanye West made some stupid comparison between their experiences and the military but Trump barely got an eyelash bat.

CPT Jack Durish - That's good to know. I'm not seeing a great deal of it in my world which is largely social media and web. In any case, you're right, that wasn't the point. I think Trump is trying, yet again, to buy his way out of insulting the military community.

SGT Jeremiah B. - It appears that Trump is more of a politician than any of us thought as he "...is trying, yet again, to buy his way out of insulting the military community". Don't they all?

10 Million to a billionaire is nothing, hell he carries more in chump change.

CW3 Kevin Storm Yes, you are right. But think about the possible fallout on CNN if they refuse to contribute this, "chump change" to Veteran's groups. It makes them look cheap, unsympathetic and greedy. Trump, on the other hand, comes out smelling like a rose, saying, "Well, at least I tried to help Veterans. You should vote for me." If CNN does contribute the money, Trump can say, "Look what I already did for the Veterans! You should vote for me!" I think it's a classic win-win scenario for Mr. Trump.

CSM Charles Hayden Passed 7/29/2025 A super point !! Of course, as things are now Hillary is too busy with her shovel, trying to keep the earth (aka - bad publicity) from swallowing her up. Thanks for that input.

Deflection. He knew he screwed up with that whole better training that the military mess, so here is his chance to drown that out with something he has tons of.....money. Add to that he's challenging CNN to make a donation he'll match and he cannot loose. Trump 2016!!!

Can't anybody make a magnanimous gesture without someone sniping? Of course Trump wants to earn some browny points for it. So what? Countless people donate to charities to get a deduction. Countless politicians kiss babies (even if they despise them) to get votes. So what? I grew up in Baltimore which benefited enormously by the charity of Enoch Pratt. New York enjoyed similar treatment from other magnates. Lesser successful people endow hospitals and schools. Should we despise all these people or, at the very least, question all their motives? Let's just accept their gifts graciously. Don't worry. Trump won't know that you didn't vote for him despite his gesture...

Love him or hate him, this is an excellent move on his part. Sure, Trump thinks he can buy his way into or out of just about anything, but this is good PR on his part. I know there are a lot of Trump-haters, but I'm open to this "suggestion" he's offering CNN.

I see a good deed as a good deed. Maybe CNN doesn't have an established history of being veteran friendly.

PVT Robert Gresham - If Mr. Trump didn't put enough money to match the $10,000,000 into irreversible escrow to be paid to the same veteran's groups as the money from CNN would be paid to, then it is "just a lot of self-serving grandstanding".
If he did put enough money to match the $10,000,000 into irreversible escrow to be paid to the same veteran's groups as the money from CNN would be paid to, then it is "just a lot of self-serving grandstanding".
