Great question. I made the Commandant List at all 3 NCOES. If you look at previous promotion boards AARs it will state in most of them that individuals that exceeded the standards at NCOES courses were looked favorably, why? Let's make it simple, we have 1 position to fulfill and 2 packets remaining, yours and a peer. Both packets look alike, both 1/1 on NCOERS or best qualified if under the new system, both have the same schools and on and on. Here's where a "positive" discrimator which is the same as setting yourself apart from your peers comes into effect. If both packets are the same and both have APFT scores of 300, then look for something else that one packet has and the other don't. If you have a check mark on "exceeded course standards" on your 1059 and the other guy don't, then is like sorry you're both great NCOs but only one promotion. The answer is we will promote the one that had the one positive discriminator. That's why is so important NOT to take anything we do in the Army lightly and always try to exceed standards in everything we do. Apply the analogy to pro-football, if I have one player scoring 2 touchdowns per game and one scoring 1 or less during the pre-season, who will I select to be on the team and that's saying they are getting the ball thrown to the same number of times.

It is a feather in your cap, as it distinguishes you from your peers by using a universally accepted standard, but it is not a panacea. Other elements of your packet are scrutinized more and weighted more by board members.

1SG (Join to see) - your profile said army reserve, when did you join? and was there a difference between army reserve and active when making ranks?

The big difference between the components is AC has an appearance board and the USAR has a paper board. Also, the USAR does not have the concept of cutoff scores by MOS; you either make the points or you don't, then it becomes a matter of slots available.

I can't answer that, never got one, made SFC at 9 years of services , many of my peers than got it make SFC at 12 or 13 years, I think performent in an NCOER weight more than a 1059 that is my opinion

It is a good thing because you stand out among peers. However you may only see that bullet once in a records review. It does not carry as much weight as SAMC, Sergeant Morales, or other important leadership, team, training, bullets on your Evaluation that are continuous. Commandants list is an individual achievement. You promotion to the Sr ranks is dependent on your development of Jrs and value of you bring to entire Army. Your NCOER will ALWAYS be that catalyst.

Any little edge you can get on your peers would help but at the end of the day it all depends on your branch and what they are looking for during the senior board. Good luck this year.

It doesn't have one, mainly because it is so subjective. Commandant's list in WLC (now BLC) was 300 kids. In ALC my NCOA didn't have any because there were only two classes graduating (about 20 people) and my entire class save one person had a GPA of 100% (this is common in EOD classes). For SLC commandant's list was based on each individual class, and could only be the top 10%, which was two of us. So the title of "Commandant's list" doesn't give anyone a good idea of anything. But there can only be one Honor Grad. Every unit I've been in would put in an AAM or ARCOM for it.

I know when I was an SGL there, we didn't do a commandants list, but the top 2 guys still got "exceeded course standards" on the 1059. From what I have heard, it's kinda like the other guys said, NCOERs are more important, but with all things equal, it is a positive mark that another guy might not have. Interesting that some of the units put guys in for an award. Did it get approved? I was told that they couldn't get one since they were already given some sort of recognition on the 1059.

First, you should go there with the mentality that you are going to be Distinguished Graduate. If your going there just to get a 1059 and be done, your hurting yourself.
Second, besides going on your 1059, exceeded course standard, it also goes in your ERB as a code. This lets the board know you were DG, HG, or CL. It is posted in the center column of military schools.

Your NCOERs will have a greater impact but your performance at NCOES will be visible. Your next NCOER can and should have a bullet referring to your performance at NCOES. All of your 1059s are visible to boards throughout your career. By comparison typically only your last 5 NCOERs get reviewed. If you excel at NCOES it will be noted; especially for senior NCO positions were the competition is much closer between qualified candidates.
