Where in that article did it say that "lefties" or liberals were responsible for this decision? Oh, that's right--nowhere. The Board of F ire Commisioners decided to have them removed. And it was the union that asked to put the flags on two trucks, without going through the Board of Fire Commissioners.

Does anyone looking at that picture really think there are no safety or operational considerations that might come into play? You can see that the flag when hanging loose will cover the opening latch to that compartment. It's hard enough to see when you're driving behind a firetruck as is; does anyone believe having a large flag flapping behind it coyldn't possibly be a distraction to drivers.

And lastly, what was really the union's reason for suddenly suggesting that just two trucks in the district fly flags? Does anyone think that firefighters weren't already considered patriotic? Is there any operational reason for the flags? Why not a flag decal like they put on US based airplanes that still shows the colors but can't get in the way?

I suspect this was done as a political move by the union related to some power struggle between the union and the Board of Fire Commisioners that decides pay raises for firefighters. But this knee jerk reaction about liberals is unfounded based upon the article. Actually, since republicans are anti-union, and seek to bust them whenever possible, I guess you could say that it was the leftie union that asked to have the flags put on in the first place.

And if not having a flag on a firetruck equals no American pride, does that mean that all the fire departments across the country that don't fly flags off the back are unpatriotic and have no pride in America?

I agree that the placement of the flags could've been thought out better. Knee jerk reaction just like the military!

As a volunteer firemen, driving a fire truck is dangerous enough. I don't need any distractions. Even so much as a flag flapping in the breeze as I am trying to back into tight quarters to fill a drop tank. There are just too many "crunchies" (personnel, and property) around when your in a hurry and the "crunchies" are in a hurry.

The left has had enough of the Americacentric flag waiving. They had to suck it up after 9-11 because the spirit was so overwhelming. Now their teeth are being shown again. Time to go after he flag. In their mind it is exclusionary, racists/prejudiced and has a terrible history of oppression blah, blah, blah as they sip their Starbucks latte.

This, of course, was done under the guise of "safety". Never mind that no evidence was presented that their were actually demonstrable safety issues by the fire department. A thinly veiled slight at the stars and stripes hiding behind safety. Most don't have the courage to say what they think out loud or espouse the real reason they want them down.
