Liberal left freak mode again as usual. What gets lost in this is exMIL types understand the concept of chain of command, what their authority is and IS NOT, etc. They tend to be loathe doing things because they can but do what's legal to meet the mission objective. They are not PC but clearly articulate in their assessments. They don't like their stuff being sifted for political optics. The list goes on. So if Gen Mattis approaches the job with great humility and orientation to service, he'll do fine.

I have to clarify my thumbs up to you CPT; while I firmly believe in the "Civilian" nature of these positions to the point that the US Military remains under civilian control and cannot act unilaterally in it's mission, I do not believe that prior Military Service (fully retired or veteran status) precludes anyone to an appointment to SECDEF or other high Government office. I do believe in precluding anyone in an active duty or reserve status.

CDR Jon Corrigan - Im not sure that it does. I'm sure the length of time is relatively arbitrary in juxtaposition to a significant amount of time in the course of abnormal human lifespan to be significantly long enough to feel removed from the previous position

Right, It's always given me the deer in the headlight feeling when they keep putting a CEO or company managers, in a position like that without one day of military experience.

Is because the position has wrongly shifted over time from the Sec. of War to the crowning jewel of the military-industrial complex, the CEO of defense contracts I.e. fraud, waste, and abuse. Could be why left media immediately started spinning it. The term "mad dog" is part of their theme of painting him as a war-monger and is not helpful. Yet they forget that most that have seen the horrors of war are more hesitant to enter into it, but when they do they go "all in" to get it done according to military milestones vice focus groups and polls.
