What is your favorite style of self-defense (to include EDC), and why?

Verbal judo. At my age if I can't talk my way out of a situation then Glock .40. I'm old and brittle and I don't believe in a fair fight with someone stronger and faster.

MSG (Join to see) - My brother loves .40, I enjoy the extra rounds offered by 9, given the relatively minor difference in ballistics. He swears by it though.

SSG Vik Polivka - Always go with what you're comfortable with. My dainty wife tried a 9mm ... damn near smacked her in the face. The .22 fit her like a glove. And then she bedazzled it ... She is and forever will be my girly girl.

As a recreational/fitness thing I choose jujitsu. It is easier on my body than say judo or kickboxing. I am 47 and have to be much more careful and use my mind and experience over the younger guys. However, for real self defense if I can't 'diplomatically' avoid it- 911 or 9mm whichever is more appropriate for the moment.

BTW my EDC is Glock 30S (.45) and if I need something slimmer (business suit e.g.) or BUG in addition, I use Sig P238 (.380) Looks like a micro 1911.

I've taken Hagganah, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu and a few others I've dabbled in. Each one brings something to the table, but the forms I'm comfortable with and that work naturally in a given situation are the ones I use in a confrontation.

Have you gone to Benning for MACP4 (I think it's Master Trainer now)? Mixing is good, I learned a lot with a little boxing, like how to actually punch correctly. I think it gets overlooked, and the drills you learn are great for incorporating into any style that uses strikes.
Isn't Tim Kennedy in Austin?

I was recently introduced to someone who trains with Kennedy. I'm hoping to get an introduction. I'm in the Reserves now so I doubt I'll ever get level 4

SFC Josh Billingsley - Might bump into him at Shot Show. Just walk up, and punch him in the face, I think you get a free class for that.

I have kickboxing (Muay Thai), Brazilian Jujitsu, Judo, and boxing training. I have a very small build so I favor Jujitsu over other styles. At the same time, many do not know how to fight on the ground as opposed to stand up.

Interestingly, I've never heard of EDC though I'll obviously look it up, I've personally, as I've said elsewhere on here, grown to love both aikido as well as iaido, not for any practical reasons, however, only for their purely aerobic benefit, as well as the sheer complexity and or precision's of the motions, as well as the fluidity needed...I did also see an aikido group on the site here, as well, which, if nothing else, is, at the very least, encouraging, lol...

I only see self defense with the man attacking a woman. What does a defenseless old white guy like me (or perhaps old black guy) do against a mean lean female on the prowl????

I took a few Lessons of Tae Kwan Do before I joined the Service. I thought it was a good system. More Recently took MOAB and the Instructor complimented my kicking style and asked where I picked that up. I told him I took a little Tae Kwan Do when I was 17. When your 6'4" your Legs are a Readily Available Weapon.

SSG Vik Polivka - My Goal is usually to let your momentum carry you past me and then nail you in the back of your knee once you're on the ground I can get away from you. If that don't work I'm going to kick the Crap Out of You.

"You fight like a Girl" Damn Right some of those self defense techniques they are teaching the Ladies now work damn fine and I have no problem employing them either.

I earned a 1st degree black belt in TKD, 3rd in Combat Hapkido, 2nd in Traditional Hapkido, green belt in Judo. Did a little kickboxing and had some training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. My favorite martial art is avoiding trouble. Second to that is using my wit to talk my way out. Failing that, run away, dial 911... I've never had to go beyond my second choice. I'm just a big powder puff. Also, I'm too old and fat to put up much of a fight.

CPT John Sheridan - My Favorite System also Capt'n. MOAB Management of Aggressive Behavior 1st day is nothing but de-escalation 2nd day is what to od if that doesn't work and someone is bound and determined to cause you serious bodily harm.

I have a good judo and wrestling background. That wont prevent me from using various strikes to various parts of the body.

Having trained in a number of martial arts, I've learned hundreds of techniques. They are great for playing around in the studio and showing how smart you are. For real hand-to-hand self defense, I think learning 3 or 4 basic techniques (nothing fancy, no crazy kicks, no spinning or flying through the air) and getting real good at them is best.

CPT John Sheridan - I agree, "Ain't no sense playing a hundred notes when one will do", or if you want to be that guy, "I'd rather fight the guy who studied 1000 moves once, than the guy who studied one move 1000 times". I think styles tend to go along the lines of branches arguing which is best, it's kind of a pointless endeavor. How the fighter uses what they know, and their willingness to finish the fight, is what's important.

I have a subcompact for the summer, but I don't like firing it nearly as much as a full size. Does it mess with you at all?

SSG Vik Polivka - The XD is nice. Very accurate. My summer gun is a Smith Bodyguard 380 because I need something very light so my comfy shorts don't fall down lol.

SGT David T. - For shorts, I wear a belt under my shirt, with an IWB holster. It works really well.

Verbal jousting, with overwhelming colorful metaphors on my part. If that fails, my .357 Magnum.
