Do you have a box/s of military treasures that you would run into a burning house to save? What do you have in there and why is it significant? Most importantly, does everybody else know the significance? You see it all the time. Someone inherits something in grandma and grandpa's attic and it looks cool, but you don't know the whole story behind it. What is in YOUR box?

Card
This isn't in the house, but is something I carry with me in my wallet.

It was given to me on Veterans Day, as I was traveling TDY to Ft Knox in 2010. I think I was in Chicago, and the father walked up to me and handed me this card, thanked me for my service, and disappeared before I could say anything.

I carry it with me every day so that on the days I feel like the stupidity is overwhelming or I just feel like I have no fight left in me.....I will remember that warriors never quit. My Soldiers deserve the best, and I can't give that if I'm wallowing in self-pity.

Additionally, I have a New Testament bible that my old roommate gave me as a commissioning gift. He carried it in Vietnam, and I have a nearly identical one that was given to me on my first mobilization....both of which I have locked safe.

CPT Butler

There are a lot of Gold Star families who are ultra committed to our service members. It is part of their healing. Grab them and hug them and they just break down, even 10 years later. Respect!

SFC Mark Merino -Had I read the card before I saw it, I would have. I did email them later and thanked them so much for everything. My memorial day gift to my OIC was a photo that I made as a tribute for a CPT Freeman that was KIA for him in Iraq as well. He gave a print to the family as well....so it was an amazing experience for me. I was so humbled to know that a family would want something I made...that I could somehow give something back to them to tell them that as long as I'm breathing, their son's story will live.

CPT (Join to see) I have never seen a card like that. What amazing parents! I am sure their son is proud looking down on them that they would do something like this. Of course this is every parents worst nightmare, me included, and I would like to think that I could do something so honorable at the worst time in your life. I just don't know. This is certainly the most impactful thank you for your service that I have seen. Thank you very much for sharing this.

I do not have a military treasures box. My treasure is flesh and blood and still loves her pink bunny.

Before I went to Afghanistan, I didn't own a rifle prior to 1898. Now I have 10.

We'll have to go shooting sometime. We probably better shoot the cannon around here. I might get arrested in New Jersey. =)

SSG Buddy Kemper, congratulations on your retirement. Enjoy the time you have to pursue your passion. The military is a great experience for developing leadership skills. The world is in great need of these. All of the best.

Thanks Lt. Kinda weirded out by it, but I know it's time to go. Old bones are talking to me louder and louder and I've lost a couple steps. Wife wants me to pick up a few overtime shifts at the Sheriff's office and all I want to do is grow a mullet and play golf. Hooah.

CW5 (Join to see), I still have my original jump wings that were awarded to me on Fryar DZ on 9APR69, and I put them in my shadow box. When they were first awarded in 1941 they were Sterling silver but the jump wings that you and I were awarded were silver filled. The jump wings issued now are silver plated as I understand.
I found these Sterling silver jump wings in an antique shop and wore them until I retired. They were not part of the original strike (350 Sterling silver badges from Bailey, Banks and Biddle), but still are WWII vintage. I always liked wearing a piece of history!

I have my "Kerry Kollection"... I lost everything but my DD214 when my first wife and I divorced, including all of my military awards and decorations. I didn't think much about it until I read that John Kerry was sporting his as part of his political theater. But, I thought to myself, hadn't he thrown them all onto the White House lawn when he protested the Vietnam War or some such? Well, he did. However, his attitude du jour required him to make a public show of his "bravery" and he acquired a new set from the military. That's when I learned that they would issue you a new set (one time, I believe) on application. I don't have the certificates or the citations, but I have the hardware.

I also recently found a website where I can purchase the foreign awards that the Army couldn't, of course, replace.

My copy of my DD-214 I don't trust the bank (my SD box) or town hall to actually have the copy I have on file with them when I really need it.

In my box is a WW II Japanese flag my father got in the pacific, some photos from the Mighty MO Surrender Ceremony, a currency collection dating from WW II military script form Japan, China, Japanese occupation currency from the P.I., various badges, pins, currency from my years with NATO, and all of 13 1/2 yrs of sea duty & deployments.  Photos, and other little things I thought would be cool to leave my sons & grand son some day.

You don't want to file your DD-214 at city hall anyway. Once you do it becomes a public record. So anyone can get your name, date of birth, and social security number. Identity theft hazard. The number one growing crime.

The ETS documentation specifically instructed me to submit my DD-214s to the County Recorder, and get stamped copies. To date I have not detected any unauthorized use of the records.
