- Fort Benning
- Fort Gordon
- Fort Hood

- Fort A.P. Hill
- Fort Belvoir

They were West Point graduates and officers in the Spanish American war before the Civil War. Learn your own damn history, DOD.

What is truly sad and troubling is the cancel culture that is currently happening because people are offended. Instead of having people read about and learn from history, the current state is to wipe it from all memory. At the time the Forts were named, there was a purpose in memorializing the Generals, but that's no longer important. Well, shouldn't Fort Custer be renamed? After all, he massacred all those Indians.
Which brings in another renaming catastrophe...I don't agree with renaming the Washington Redskins or Cleveland Indians. Next will be the Apache, Blackhawk & Chinook helicopters. When does it stop?

CPT Chris McGowan - Sorry about that. I worded my reply backwards which completely flipped what I intended to say.

Regardless of any good done early in the confederate officers careers their later treason completely negates that.

CPT Chris McGowan - To make it easy for everyone, since a change is inevitable. I suggest that no person's name be used. No matter the motivation for fighting on either side would imply one side was the heroes. Since I wasn't there, I can't say what the people of the times thought about the situation. I can say that not everyone in the north fought to free the slaves, take a look at Maryland and Kentucky both states remained in the union and still had slavery. Lincoln had union troops in Maryland to keep it from leaving the union. The only true heroes were the ones that died for their personal beliefs, I don't have to believe in what their motivations were. While you are at it change all the names no matter the location of the installation. The military is supposed to be A Political, just follow the oath taken. Use the number system or anything that does not imply a person's name.

CPT Chris McGowan - I can't argue a point that I was not privy to, the mindset of why one does what they do, history is written by the victors. How many people on either side do you think could read or much better write their own name? I have been fortunate enough to have lived in the North and South and seen the wrongs on both sides
It took Truman to desegregate the military and Johnson to desegregate the schools
When I moved up north back in the 70's, I found it funny that the schools I went to only had white people in the classroom, I thought that was strange.
No what side one was on, there were more poor people than rich. Like the old saying goes, "It's a rich man's War and a poor man's fight"

How can a side be half right and half wrong at the same time?
Why would I put my life on the line to allow others to own another person? I wouldn't

This is nothing new. We change names as more deserving individuals are honored. Fort Belvior used to be known as Camp Humphries (after Union General Andrew Humphries, Chief of Engineers); Fort McClellan was once known as Camp Shipp (after LT William Shipp of the 10th Cavalry Reg. killed in action leading a charge at the Battle of San Juan Hill); and there are many other examples. We've de-commissioned approximately 162 bases over our history. History evolves and we re-interpret things as we learn more. It doesn't mean we forget, but no one ever has accused the Germans of forgetting just because they don't have bases named after Nazis.

BG Edward Burley - Names get changed because someone has pull in DC and directs a little money to their politician. It doesn't bother anyone in DC, but it does to the locals and perhaps to someone who served there.

Lt Col Timothy Cassidy-Curtis - Yes it would matter as athiest do not believe in God and are a part of trying to erase what this country was founded on. People have this idea that I get to express my freedoms any way I wish and well no u do not. The line is fine yes but they have crossed it. U want to deface the Flag disrespect the National Anthem or any of the other symbols of our country u be jailed for it and after a mandatory 15 years hard time when u could get out if u have not screwed up u should be given a choice. Respect this country or denounce ur citizenship and we will fly u to any country in the world. U do not get to take anything with u cause god forbid that u take anything from the country u hate and that afforded u more chances to do well for yourself than any other country in the world.

SPC (Join to see) I respect your thought but do you not think our First Amendment rights are not important? Our rights are not given by our government but by our creator. This needs to be made very clear when various groups on both side go to squash free speech. The First amendment is one of the most powerful contains in our Constitution. “IT IS NOT OUR GOVERNMENTS JOB TO GIVE OR TAKE RIGHTS” The job of our government is to protect those rights!! It is very critical that we return to teaching the constitution to our children or our country is doomed, there are movements going on in our country this very day to abolish our constitution!!

Like I said. Leave it as they are. There are still decendants to this day from both sides. Officers or not. It is still thier name. Enough already. Talk about wasting more defense funding. Bad enough they can't decide on a uniform much less worry about changing the names. I eas proud to stationed at these bases.

CPT Chris McGowan - Chamberlin is Maine specific. To rename Ft. Hood to Ft. Chamberlin would be wrong on several levels and extremely unpopular. Not that Joshua Chamberlin doesn't deserve the recognition, just not in Texas. He is a hero from Maine and I find nothing wrong with building an appropriate post in Maine and naming it after him. Maine deserves a full on Army post that future soldiers could call their own and be proud of. I would be proud to support Ft. Chamberlin in Maine with my tax dollars. Just like I am proud to support Ft. Hood with my tax dollars. I would not spend one penny on the cancel culture of today's federal government and if I could withhold my tax dollars, this current federal government would go broke first. Ft. Hood holds a near and dear spot in my heart and will forever. It appears you have your battles and I have mine.

I apologize for the long reply. Joshua Chamberlin is somewhat a personal hero. I visited the 20th Maine memorial every time I went to Gettysburg. I learned about LTC Chamberlin while attending an NCO school at Ft. Indian Town Gap and learned about his charge that kept the flank of little Round Top out of the hands of the Confederacy. Before I left the State I had to get back to Gettysburg and pay homage to a man of God and man who wanted to do the "right thing" for his State and country in a horrible war.

I respect the memory of Lee, Bragg, Hood and the Confederacy because they were doing what the Constitution in the original Bill of Rights as ratified in 1791 authorized them to do and that is to legislate from the States. If in doubt look at the 10th Amendment and think 1860 and States rights. The Federal Government was a somewhat weak assembly that had very little power and authority over the everyday doings and running of the States. The real power was in the States and NOT the Federal government. Simply put, the Southern States rejected the Federal government stepping in and telling them how to run their business.

Yes, slavery was and is a horrible thing. I get it. America gets it. Slavery was on it's way out and it was going to end at some point because Americans demanded it. And yes, the South went to war in part over slavery. That part was a huge mistake in good judgment as made by the Southern States. But, they also went to war over States rights. The right to keep the Federal government out of their business and allow them to remain independent as per the original Bill of Rights. I happen to agree with that portion of why they went to war.

The Federal Government has destroyed their credibility to govern fairly. There is no reason why America should be 29 trillion dollars in debt except it is a Federal government that has over stepped it's common sense bounds. Not only has our Congress over stepped their legitimate bounds the Courts tend to do that as well.

The cancel culture is out of control and it is because the political powers in Washington D.C. refuse to listen to logical arguments and instead want to push their leftist agenda onto taxpaying, honest and hard working Americans. Just like the Southern States rejected an overly aggressive and out of control Federal government in 1860, we must do the same now or we will lose our Republic. States rights first, States rights now and States rights forever. It's been that way since 1791. It appears some folks have forgotten that.

I say leave the names the Hell alone. They've been named whatever they are longer than all but a tiny minority of Americans have been alive.
The names weren't "offensive" even five years ago. QUIT coddling a small, albeit very vocal, MINORITY of socialists, commies and America haters.

This is a tough question because the answer, if any, concerns more than a name change. These facilities are not disposable or forgettable objects. These bases are intertwined with American history and represent the USA in times of great challenge and conflict, forging the country into pre-eminence in the post-war period and helping to forge its culture socially, in entertainment and the popular imagination. Part of their mythology is in the name and to change it is nothing but cheap sticker slapped onto a well known, polished chrome nameplate. It negates the tragedies and triumphs of the USA in the past century.
For a name change to work and become permanent it would have to be attached to a serious event, like war or a challenge where the base, with the new name, becomes noteworthy.
It seems best, in this context, to let the names be.

Fort Hood to Fort Benavidez in honor of MSG Raul P. "Roy" Benavidez.

As for the others, I could see them being renamed to any of the following due to being Presidents who served in the Army or militia or being a famous general. Alternatively I would recommend Medal of Honor recipients of the State where the Fort is.

Presidents
- General of the Armies George Washington
- General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower
- General of the Army (Union) Ulysses S. Grant
- Major General Andrew Jackson
- Major General William H. Harrison
- Major General James A. Garfield
- Major General Zachary Taylor
- Brigadier General Franklin Pierce
- Brigadier General Andrew Johnson
- Brigadier General Chester A. Arthur
- Brevet Brigadier General Benjamin Harrison
- Colonel Thomas Jefferson
- Colonel James Madison
- Colonel Theodore Roosevelt
- Colonel Harry S. Truman
- Major James Monroe
- Major Millard Fillmore
- Brevet Major William McKinley
- Captain Ronald Reagan
- Captain Abraham Lincoln
- Captain John Tyler
- Private James Buchanan

Generals
- General of the Armies Pershing
- General of the Army Bradly
- General of the Army MacArthur
- General of the Army Marshall
- General of the Army (Union) Sherman
- General of the Army (Union) Sheridan
- General Patton
- General Powell
- General Schwarzkopf

SPC (Join to see) - I'm not a democrat, I never advocated for this change in the first place. You my guy have some serious anger and psychological issues behind that keyboard. I'd tell you to go to your local VA for a talk with a therapist but the VA is trash.

Plain and simple, you don't know me or my political opinions based off one comment on what we should name them to. Fact is they already changed them. Many to things I didn't agree with or thought there were better options.

Regardless, it's done and nothing we want or say about it matters. Doesn't change where I or thousands of others served.

I'll ignore the historical what if's, they didn't happen no matter how much you wish they did.

Take a breather and seriously consider getting some help for your mental and emotional well being. I'm not thrilled with the name changes but I'm not spazzing out about it behind a keyboard like a tough teenager.

All of these would work, except John Tyler, the only US president who was not honored with the flag being flown at half-staff when he died. This is because he sided with the South, and President Lincoln thought it inappropriate to give him this traditional honor and sign of respect.

PO3 Carl Denbow A little more detail on Tyler from Wikipedia:
“ Tyler's death was the only one in presidential history not to be officially recognized in Washington, because of his allegiance to the Confederate States of America. He had requested a simple burial, but Confederate President Jefferson Davis devised a grand, politically pointed funeral, painting Tyler as a hero to the new nation. Accordingly, at his funeral, the coffin of the tenth president of the United States was draped with a Confederate flag; he remains the only U.S. president ever laid to rest under a flag, not of the United States.[176] Tyler had been more loyal to Virginia and his own principles than to the Union of which he had been president.”
