I learned that family wasn't always blood, and blood wasn't always family.
I have seen people have blood family members shit on them, and members of the military offer body parts to someone in need.

When I act amused or laugh about some things, people wonder. I say you can either laugh or cry; they are not that different. I prefer the former.

SFC (Join to see) - We were at muster one morning, and our XO, who was MILES behind our revered previous one, referred to the United Way campaign. He said "You WILL donate." There was silence. Then his face fell as he realized how stupid an order that was...

I learned that I could do more sit-ups and run and max a PT. Test than the younger Veteran's. WE would Start in Front of the Hospital and come all the way around and back and helicopters would be taking off. I was proud to be in Great Physical Shape. Some of the younger ones had to do remedial PT.

During my military service I learned to study for my next rating. It led to being more prepared for college. During the most difficult times, I found a deeper faith that helped me through some very dark times. All in all, I matured rapidly and knew I was stronger and prepared for whatever in life may come.

I learned that I could function in combat even in the most difficult situations. I learned that I was a natural born leader and that I could do difficult things when I set my mind to it.

The ability to function in stressful situations with minimal sleep. When I think back to some of those days, I ask myself how I found the strength and will to keep going.

Like working 60 hours out of 72, then being pulled out of bed less than an hour later to fight a forest fire on the base. I did it, but I was certainly not at my best as I used a shovel and backpack sprayer on the hot spots. I collapsed a second time, as soon as I got back to the barracks. I didn't even have the strength to undress before I fell on my bunk.

After completing the Drill Sgt school I found I was able to demonstrate and teach effectively, speak to a large group without being nervous, I had more patience and was able to stick to a task until completion.

learned to face challenge with resolve and order. I learned to plan, prepare and meet situations with stern resolve to complete my responsibility and assist others in meeting theirs. I eventually found the drive to improve my physical and emotional well being while reassuring myself internally that I had no need to regret any shortfalls, but to strive to do better in the future.

I learned i could help others help themselves i learned to be humble and that i could handle humility. Most importantly i learned i had Brothers and Sisters from all walks of life. Last but not least i learned that i love the high speed, low drag, teaching and learning at the same time machine was my best Friend. Thank you all for your service.
