So I was thinking about this after researching for another post, in Heartbreak Ridge Gunny Highway has some great one liners, funny, but not intended to be. Same is true of Gunny Hartman in Full Metal Jacket. So RPers, who do you think is more unintentionally funny

Neither, both are caricatures - cartoon characters for a movie. Of the two movies, Heartbreak Ridge was nothing more than escapist entertainment - it was not 'grenada' - Jesus H Christ - the scenes of 'Camp Lejeune' look nothing like Lejeune and the homecoming scene is El Toro - bullshit movie. Full Metal Jacket was more real, particularly the drill instructor scenes from the 60s' but again, a caricature.

PO3 Steven Sherrill
GySgt Carl Rumbolo They are not meant to be literal representations. All movies are escapism. Though I imagine as a Gunnery Sergeant in the USMC you have a very different view on these portrayals. I still enjoy both films. I like both Highway and Hartman. Thing about movies is that they are about suspending belief for a couple of hours. If something occurs in a film that slaps you out of that suspension, then you won't be able to enjoy the rest of the film.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - Exactly, which is why I walked out on "Heartbreak Ridge" - The actual Heartbreak Ridge was a Army battle during the Korean War - the original script was about the Army but the Army refused to support the film because of it's negative portrayals. The Marines supported it initially but withdrew after seeing a first cut of the film. None of 'training' the 'marines' went through had even a passing resemblance of reality, the way officers treated the Marines was flat out garbage and it was just a technically poor film. Jingo bullshit.

Gunny Highway is the funnier one. Gunny Hartman is the more traditional Gunny that can be seriously-funny
