Why are baggers at the commissary still a thing?

I would suspect as part of our support to the Local Community. I don't shop at the Commissary being the closest ones are miles away but if they are anything like the ones at most places they are Very Young, Very Old or Mentally Challenged and I appreciate the Service they Provide.

Now that I live near a base it is not so important. But, we we live 43 miles away, when we visited the commissary, the baggers earned their tip and I was very happy to have the help with the large number of bags we bought.
Also the commissary does serve the military retired community some of whom are no longer able to get around too well anymore.

I just ask them to put my stuff in my cart, and leave a modest tip. I personally don't need a bagger, but there's a lot of retirees on military installations that need help with their things and I think its good for the community.

I have no idea who does it now but in my day most of them were either retired enlisted or children of enlisted.

Its still a thing because I want them, and Im sure IM not alone. It provides a service and a Job. Stop being so dam cheap, 2 to 5 bucks aint gonna send you to the poor house. But it will stop the LOOK.

Good summer job for younger dependents. On base and not far from home. Most healthy people don't need carryout service but I do like to have the stuff bagged and put in my cart. I am still able to push the cart to the car and load the bags in. Locally they always ask "Do you need help out today?"

Because it is honest work. Jobs beat a handout and performing a service nets you pay and you buy stuff and the economy works. It is a viscous cycle, yet nothing works quite as well

The baggers are there to provide a service and they do well. They get no pay except for the tips people give them. TIPS are not mandatory, and you can say no the the service (which surely beats using the service and not tipping)
Why do people have to gripe about everything?

ENS I have talked to a lot of the younger ones and found that most are working during college break. That is a good thing for they qill seel better about their education having worked for it. If yhey are college kids, a little extra helps.

If always seemed as if no one really wants them to push their carts out, and it's pretty obnoxious that they expect a tip when they don't even ask if you want them to help you. Plus, I rarely carry cash and have to be guilted every time I go there. It's easier just to go to the local civilian stores.

SFC Pete Kain - It's a service that I don't want and can do myself why should I be forced to pay for it?

Idk where you shop but they start before I have a chance to say anything to them, and if I do say no thank you I get a look.

I can see how it's helpful, but the commissary needs to ensure their baggers are respectful. I don't go to the grocery store remembering to bring money for tips just for someone to do something I'm happy to do myself. My sister went to the commissary this morning and she didn't have money to tip, so she insisted on taking her groceries out herself. The bagger was rude to her, and she had two young children with her to take care of on top of the groceries. The sense of entitlement for tips, makes many of the baggers appear rude and disrespectful. My sister often avoids the commissary because of it, which is unacceptable in my opinion.
