1) Are you prepped and ready to show up and ship to Basic Training?
2) If you answer "yes" to #1, then why are you stressing about it?
3) Why are you asking about being released? Are you no longer wanting to be in the NG?
4) Use your real name. Seriously. I get it you're probably wanting to show tribute to the singer, but seriously you are getting into the military. Be a tad more professional. It's really hard to give guidance and mentorship to a Soldier that doesn't want to use their real name.

The singer is Chaka Khan. Shaka Zulu was of the Zulu Nation. Me thinks I see a fake profile in the Op. Could just be me.....

SSG Warren Swan - Screwed up in the head about their enlistment because they asked their buddies instead of the Recruiter. ARNG Access to the NG with the first contract........there is no DEP. They have a DEP like RSP structure but it is not the same thing.

From my understanding of the National Guard is you only swear in once. Here in Louisiana, whenever we swear in we’re officially apart of the Louisiana National Guard, and therefore there is no need to sign a second contract. We don’t even back to the MEPS to ship, you’re state pays for your travel to basic and AIT. As far as you feeling reluctant, I think that’s completely normal. You’re just having fear because you don’t know quite what to expect. But I’m sure you’re tougher than that. If you set a cycle now of quitting you’ll be surprised how that chain reaction will cause an unbalance in your life. Just set your mind to accomplish the goal, and finish strong.

1LT Kevin Chapman - It's that way for all States. She or He is not part of any DEP program. DEP is only for Active Army......possibly USAR as well though I am not sure of USAR.

1LT Kevin Chapman - The recent difference is now they assign the recruits to a RSP unit with other recruits until they are MOS trained then they get assigned to a real NG unit. However, you are correct, first contract is the enllistment to the National Guard and they Access with the first contract if they are NG. So OP is in the National Guard right now. May not have been told that by the Recruiter but it still works that way.

You signed a contract, so what is the problem? Are you having second thoughts about serving? Below is the information that you need.

National Guard accesses with the first contract so the OP is in the National Guard. National Guard does not use the DEP, it uses the RSP "Recruit Sustainment Program". OP is already in a National Guard RSP unit with a 1SG and Company Commander with other recruits waiting for ship dates. After they get trained in their MOS, the National Guardsman leaves the RSP and joins a real National Guard Unit that deploys with trained Soldiers.

Will I be ordered to go active if I don't ship to basic?

You signed the contract. I'm not an expert on what can happen prior to going to basic training, but your recruiter is. If you really don't wish to enlist anymore, talk to your recruiter. What I would say though is that you signed a contract and you should be an adult and follow through with that obligation. It would seem to me that you could obviously use the military experience to help you develop into an adult and understand what responsibility is.

If he or she handles it as an adult, probably nothing will happen and it will be treated as a RSP Loss...........individual is in the NG RSP not the DEP. There is a difference in that he / she is currently assigned to a NG unit for RSP folks and has a Chain of Command. A DEP person has the local Recruiting Station that Recruited him/her as their Chain of Command.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - OK well here is how it works for the ARNG. I understand why they did is because I enlisted originally in the NG. The experience Soldiers fill your head with all sorts of horror stories about Infantry OSUT to try and scare you.......with some people it works. I can imagine it got worse with the GWOT.

I hope you find a loophole and get out of your contract. I don't want a soldier that didn't feel like he was obligated to serve. You don't value integrity or service enough to honor your commitments. I hope you value this lesson in your adulthood. But you will be ordered to active duty to show up. It is too late for that. Your ship date to basic training is your active duty date already. So if you miss that you can be charged with various articles in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. First, I could see Article 86: Absence without leave. It would cover your failure to report. Then maybe article 92: Failure to obey order or regulation. Welcome to being adult. We all make choices. You commitment to honor them is how you will be judged.

Sorry, but when I enlisted in 2007,the first swear in put me in. Is it that you are scared of the unknown? You need to face it head on and report! You do know OTH,General,Admin Sep or BCD look bad when trying to find work, so talk to your recruiter.

Why does it matter? You signed a contract, abide by it. Why are you trying to get out of it? Serve out your contract and if you don't like it, then get out. Shaka Con? Really? Couldn't you be more original then that?

OK, so you have sworn an oath once already. 2. You are in the Guard is you are going to drills. 3. Now, you don't want to go to training? If that's the case just what makes you think the NG still wants you??, I guarantee the Army doesn't want you. I can foresee an Other Than Honorable Discharge in the works, probably for being Absent With Out Leave State recouping any bonuses, etc via garnishment of wages and a hassle trying to get any form of government employment. Have a nice life.

First of all yes I am in the Dep program (future soldiers program) I go to drill but not with my assigned unit until after basic and I will have to sign a second contract when I return to meps to ship out I've already confirmed that with a friend who has returned from AIT with that being said do comment if you don't know if I can be released from my first contract by speaking with commander of my unit

NO......Your NOT in a DEP program. You really need to research what the difference is between the National Guard RSP and the Army DEP program. Here is a link for you to do what you should have done before signing a Enlistment Contract. Your a full time member of the National Guard now, you have a military obligation there is no DEP for the National Guard.......

Note this sentence in particular: "ARNG Soldiers are accessed during the initial MEPS processing and are on active, paid drilling status while awaiting their IET ship date. They drill with their state’s RSP until they depart for basic combat training (BCT), and then join their actual unit of assignment when they are qualified for their military occupational specialty (MOS)." Accessed means your a National Guardsman for your state right now. I used to work for HQ USAREC (Army Recruiting Command) as a contractor a while back. The Recruiting process has changed since then.......the Accessions process has not. Your first contract is with the National Guard, your second contract is with the Regular Army for training in your MOS. For an Active Duty bound Future Soldier the First Contract is for the DEP, the second contract is for Active Duty. See the difference now? You miss SHIP DATE and it is up to the Recruiting Command in conjunction with your state NG command what to do with you. Nobody can predict what will happen there. Typically with a Regular Army DEP LOSS (person who misses ship date) they write the person off and ban them from ever enlisting again. National Guard is different as it is via both the state and Regular Army both. Someone has to pay for the training slot you burned if they do not fill it.

You don't have a DEP contract if your National Guard and your not in the DEP program. Your officially in your State National Guard with your first contract signing. So yes you already have a military obligation.

I went DEP back in 83. only difference was I went active duty for 11 years. You should be active duty for basic training anyways. I believe once you've completed training they release you back to the reserves or guard unit. I don't remember the whole process but you will be issued a DD 214 then once your AIT school is available you become active duty for training and same process is repeated like Basic. It's been a few years but couldn't have changed that much

It is different now. New NG Recruits go into the NG RSP which is a special unit where they are really not assigned to a NG unit and where they drill with other new recruits until after they return from Basic Training. After Basic Training they are sent to a real NG unit. Reason for this change was the NG Soldiers were sometimes scaring off new recruits with their "war" stories (not always related to war) and recruiting losses were high for the NG. Other major reason why is some NG units did not prepare or lead their new recruits properly prior to shipping to basic training. So this was an attempt to reduce recruiting losses and training losses by keeping the new soldiers out of the units until they were trained in their MOS.

PVT (Join to see) - Do you really think the National Guard wants you if you don't want to be there? If they do it is a pretty messed up NG. You should tell your Recruiter that your no longer interested before you burn a training slot..........which tends to pizz people off.
