PO2, I am not sure when you served in the Navy, but it’s clear you are not aware of or attuned into the concerns of women veterans! PO1

PO1 Kelley Valencia - No, I didn't serve with many women except for women officers (Nurses) during my time in the States. In Vietnam itself I had very rare opportunities to encounter women - Most notably the nurses at the 27th Surgical Evac facility in Chu Lai. At the time I don't recall any concern differentiating ourselves as men or women serving in combat but simply fellow soldiers/sailors/marines there to survive and to serve honorably. As I said originally - "Once a veteran, always a veteran" - don't see gender in that phrase at all!

PO2 David Huelsmann - Look, women veterans have very different issues then the male veteran today. There are single mothers being deployed to combat zones having to leave their children with family members, there are sexual harassment issues and rapes and attempted rapes. There are so many different issues the female veteran has to deal with that only other female veterans can help them with. So I think the fact they have a group that is for them to help each other is outstanding

You are right a veteran is a veteran but every veteran whether a male or female have different issues then other veterans, That is why the VA has different programs for different veterans. Now I really hope your original statement wasn't to disparage WoVen but to recognize the women as full veterans.

SPC Earl Semler - Exactly. I am saying nothing about the issues women veterans might be having to deal with or for that matter the issues men veterans have to deal with. I am simply acknowledging their status as veterans - women or men.

Tara Galovski I did not have the opportunity to work with women when I served. During my civilian career, the active duty women and veterans that I came into contact with were all squared away. WoVeN looks like an excellent program.

It really does - but I'm thinking mostly for the younger women. They need it most.

Just an FYI - our average age is 47! The range spans the full spectrum of women Veterans from 20s through 70s. Check us out - we all can benefit from the lessons of those who have gone before us.

Now, if we could just see a counselor or take medication without losing our clearances! I truly thought that might have improvedb, by now.

In my opinion as a retired veteran, being and behaving like a member of an extremely honored and dignified group of active duty, retired, veterans, dependents and CIVSERV community which we all are either in, or come from is NEVER gender specific, and it never should be. A veteran is a veteran is a veteran, and if you served (or are serving actively still) honorably, there's only one accurate designation in my opinion, and that's "member of the military community", and I don't give a rat's a__ what rank, gender, race, religion or whatever you are - we're all part of the same team, and everyone's job is important and necessary to the successful completion of the mission, and any and all who've taken the oath and either worn the uniform, or supported those doing so, are ALL a part of this elite, special group of individuals. I personally thank each and every one of you for your service, and I salute you all!

I'd love to hear if a group opens here in the Seattle area ... or Spokane (as I might move there before a group gets here?). I'd totally do the peer leader but my health issues are pretty bad and focus/memory/concentration aren't always good. I have bad days and sometimes miss important things (though I do my very best not to).

Anyway, this sounds great, please let me know!

We are hoping to get a group in the Seattle area in February! You can also join a group virtually if more convenient. Thank you for your interest!

Excellent resource. Are they organized into city and state chapters? I appreciate the women on this forum and your perspective and expertise.

Thanks! We have in-person groups in 45 cities and growing. Our website has an active list of current sites. Women can also join a group virtually. Finally, women can become peer leaders and bring a WoVeN chapter back to their city or town.
