President Roosevelt identified more than a 100 years ago the danger of man's self centered nature leading us down a path where the citizen was more conscious of their rights than of their duties and how we are blind to our own shortcomings, especially in this matter.
Many today, do not even understand that this Nation is still a republic and most do not even understand what this means or why it is important? How do we of the New World return our citizens to an understanding of the vital role of 'citizenship' and its vital role in governing by for and of the people. In short, how do we return power to 'We the People' before it is too late, or have we already crossed that threshold?

If it is again taught the Constitution Bill of rights, is taught again in schools . With the starting of school boards and PTA again and keep Gov out. I believe it will come back

Lt Col Patrick Howard - I respect your opinion, but I'd rather have a guy who's worn the uniform- VOLUNTEERED for combat duty to do his part than some guy who has never worn the uniform, much less heard shots fired in anger and whose understanding of military affairs is theoretical at best. I'm not saying every SecDef has to be an Audie Murphy or a Chesty Puller; but Hegseth at least knows the impact decisions in the Marble Palace on the Potomac have on the guys whose boots are on the ground. SSG Wayne Wood - the more comments I read from Lt Col Howard, the more I felt he was just jealous. I am sure you have seen the same in your career in the military and out.

Simply, Sir, being a citizen to me means just working hard and paying your taxes and trying to raise a good family. I know not all can Serve in the Armed Forces and even fewer of us have fought, but citizenship to me is a privilege and should be cherished and honored. People who burn our flag and show up with signs I consider disgraceful at funerals of our KIAs disgust me. I know Free Speech isn't for just the stuff I agree with. Probably gonna rub someone wrong with that. I just LOVE those old bikers (many vets I'm sure) who get between the families at the funerals and that Westboro crowd. I got a little off topic, but I think citizenship is hopefully for all who want to do right, love our country, cherish the freedoms we have and support out military, Government& authorities (when they are right) and are willing to take part and try to fix things when things are not right. My military life is over now, but I still love they folks who serve and I miss my friends. Good topic, MAJ (Join to see) and look forward to the other answers. Blessings to you and your family and thanks for keeping us free.

PO1 (Join to see) - Great point Josh. Dictatorships don't require citizens at all. Republics REQUIRE patriotic, informed, and engaged citizens. Not in the sense of protesting...but in the every day virtues that keep us free: working, raising kids, strong families, faith, patriotism, courage....and the willingness to fight -- to fight against those who would seek to take away our freedoms, large and small

SSG Kemper, thank you for your service and passion are appreciated. The flag-burners and Westboro people disgust me as well. They have no idea how special America is...and that in almost any other country (save for some others in the West) they would be imprisoned, or worse, for speaking out. Killed in many places, especially dictatorships and countries controlled by Islamists. I'm torn on banning flag burning--I personally hate it, and would confront someone I saw burning the flag in front of me. But, at the same time, the Left -- especially on college campuses -- is undermining free speech to dramatically, that I don't like any erosions on speech. From safe spaces to speech codes to trigger warnings, we are exposing our youth less and less to speech (and views) that make them uncomfortable. Teddy Roosevelt talks about this in his 1910 speech that my book is based on. In short, he says that Republics are only free when vigorous speech is tolerated on both sides, without attempts to shut others down. That is true tolerance, not the phony stuff the Left peddles on campus and in the PC-media. Bottom line: we wore the uniform, in part, so that American citizens--including ass-clowns who burn the flag--could enjoy freedom and peace. They take it for granted, we don't -- and hence why we need to stay "in the arena"

Major. Hegseth: My question is this recently I read and article on a Marine and Soldier of Mexican descent one served in the Iraqi war one served in the Vietnam war, after they served this country in the military, they were not given citizenship status and taken down to a border town in Texas by a bus and told to run for you life, although they were allowed back in to use the VAMC, but all medications would have to be mailed to Mexico, for them. My feelings are if you served in war in this country, and want to live here that status should be granted.

Sgt Mike Sarris - I witnessed a hisapanic of Mexican heritage fast-tracked to citizenship. He and I went to Salt Lake City. We were doing physical security of Dugway Proving Ground and we were active duty on title 32. I think one of the Mexicans who got years after serving was busted for drugs and deported. Sadly.

I agree that anyone serving honorably in the U.S. military, especially in war time, should have a legal path to citizenship.

I agree LCpl James Robertson! The best "pathway to citizenship" I can think of is serving our country in the military. If you are willing to fight, and die, for this nation--you have shown me what I need to know about you. Moreover, the interpreters that I served with in Iraq and Afghanistan should also be given a fast-track to citizenship, if they qualify. Not all of them--but the ones who were with us in the thick of it, who truly committed to the mission and then came to the states--should have the opportunity to, eventually, become citizens. I have worked on behalf of many, and am helping a close Iraqi ally to get to the U.S....still too tough of a process.

If you're new arrived in this country and you are willing to pick up a rifle and defend a country that is not yours, then your citizenship should be guaranteed! Millions of Filipino's gained their citizenship through an agreement between the 2 countries!

Citizenship is doing one's part for the common good. A citizen doesn't demand special rights but acknowledges the rights of all. Abraham Lincoln said, "Liberty used as a license is self-destructive." Freedom is not doing what I want when I want, and how I want, it is the responsibility to do what is right.

Great point SrA Mizell...and who am I to disagree w/ Lincoln! That truth -- serving something greater than yourself -- is a central feature as to why veterans, while they're serving and when they hang up the uniform, make the best citizens and pillars of their community. In my book, I talk about the common good (Teddy called it "the public good") as something we should fight for, within the framework of our Constitution and a free peoples. Common good doesn't mean free stuff, it means a responsibility to certain DUTIES instead of DEMANDING MORE "RIGHTS" (although, as our Founders understood, some rights are inalienable!). However, Roosevelt stressed personal responsibility (work, fight, family, and character) before turning toward the public goods. Before we fight for causes, we should make sure our own house is in order.

My father was a World War II area veteran. My uncle served in the Army from 1949 to 1979 with time in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. I served in the Army for 23 years. Today I am a Scoutmaster who teaches Citizenship Merits Badges. My scouts have to - "Explain what citizenship in the nation means and what it takes to be a good citizen of this country. Discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of a responsible and active American citizen." We have good citizens out there. I see them everyday. I served as a broadcast journalist in the Army for most of my career. I am disappointed in our national media. There are no good news stories anymore. At best we get to see a cute kicker at the end of the newscast about a panda playing in the snow. I know that good news doesn't sell advertisements. Show me the patriots out there. Show the nation. Show the world.

Amen MSG Donahue. Thank you for your service -- both in uniform and afterwards. I wish my 3 boys (ages 5, 3 & 1) could have you as a scoutmaster. Things like the Scouts are a great example of civic organizations that need to be perpetuated and supported (unfortunately our public schools abandoned patriotism and faith a long time ago). We need to teach our kids why America is exceptional (not proud, but truly special and unique) and that they as citizens--not the government--are what keep us free. The tendency of government is to expand...especially when citizens don't fight back against government overreach.
As for the media, that is really a tough one -- because bad news gets attention. The old adage, "if it bleeds, it leads" remains true. BUT, that is not always the case at Fox News, especially on FOX and Friends. I have the pleasure of guest hosting that show, and know for a fact that we do many positive stories about the military, military families, heroes, and veterans. The challenge is finding them--because they usually don't get enough publicity to reach the eyes of producers. But when they do, we highlight them. Lots of great patriots at Fox News. FOX and Friends has also aggressively highlighted the continued failures of the VA--to hold them accountable to finally deliver to vets. So, agree w/ you generally about good news stories...but there are some shows out there that include good news that highlights our nation and military.

Looking forward to the discussion on Thursday! In addition to discussing citizenship and my book--In The Arena--I'd love to hear your thoughts about President Obama this week adding 217 troops to Iraq and 250 to Syria. Will this help? Are we doing enough? Should we be doing more, or less, to defeat ISIS? The RP community will know more than most, and I'm eager to hear your thoughts...and then provide mine. See you Thursday @ 4pmET...

I would like to know more about the specific objectives of these troops. Rooting out ISIL will not happen quickly and it will take much more support from all nations, especially Iraq and our allies in Europe. How many more attacks in Europe will need to take place until we have more of an allied presence? I can't help but feel terrible for the people of Iraq who have had to deal with a lifetime of war and turmoil. I also pray for our service members who are deploying to the region.
MAJ (Join to see) - What do you think we need to be doing with our foreign policy in Iraq and Syria?

System is still broken, and in need of a complete overhaul. The VA won't change itself, and the White House is only interested in window dressing. Much of what is being proposed on the Hill today is also half-measures. Moreover, VA unions and most vets groups are not serious about true reform.
Ultimately, veterans should be afforded TRUE CHOICE. They can choose to see their local VA...or, if they want to go somewhere else because of timeliness or quality problems, they can.
BUT THERE IS HOPE, and it's a report (that will soon be introduced as legislation) that my former organization put out last year. This is the type of reform the VA needs, check it out: http://cv4a.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Fixing-Veterans-Healthcare.pdf

I think that citizenship is paying your FAIR SHARE and not bitching about it. When you are tempted to bitch about it then think about all those crappy roads that you like to drive on, and the mediocre schools your children attend. I think citizenship is seeing that paying your taxes offers something more than a grumble under your breath- A VOICE. Citizenship means USING that voice. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE. Get in touch with your elected officials and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE when they give away the good roads and schools to the people who are already fabulously wealthy. BE HEARD- be a gadfly- protest! Like it or not, fellas, the constitution STILL allows free assembly. I am startled at the sheer number of peaceful protests (not HURTING others- perhaps. Irritating them, but not HURTING them) being broken up and the people protesting getting beaten and pepper sprayed. I gotta tell you, I think that citizenship is maybe hating like hell what the protestors stand for (I'd like to see those westborough freaks buried UNDER the jail) but being willing to die for their RIGHT to say whatever disgusting old thing their little heart desires. I agree with some here who say free speech is not an absolute. Free speech is not facing prosecution and governmental abuse based on something you SAY or PROTEST. However, it is not allowed to yell fire in a theater. It is not ok to slander others- a very slim definition that few people understand. EMPLOYERS are not obligated to observe free speech. Only governmental institutions do.
Being a citizen means looking out for your neighbors just as you would one of your own. Being a citizen is viewing yourself as a larger group that cannot accomplish a thing w/o the other citizens. When we withdraw into our own little spider holes and do not take part in civil life then we are not being good citizens.
Someone used the example of the Flint water crisis earlier. Now THAT is an outstanding example of gov't OVER REACH. I live in Michigan. How many of you out in the other states know that our governor has instituted a "rule by fiat" approach to struggling cities and towns? Did you know that he regularly APPOINTS "city managers" to over rule the local elected officials and take action without citizen input or objections? Did you know that in many cities LIKE FLINT the local officials are little more than figureheads? They can vote and debate ALL DAY LONG, and these "city managers" can do whatever they please with public funds, regulations, and other governmental programs? That they need not get ANY approval from anyone else for their choices because they have been given COMPLETE power to run those cities and towns? How about that? Well, the people of Michigan said- "mmmmm. No." To thus practice a few years ago and voted for a referendum to bring a halt to it? Guess what our fine governor did? He went to the legislature and had the pass a few rules and then SOMEHOW they just voted that referendum out of existence. They also tacked on a rule that this issue can never be voted on by the PEOPLE again. SOOO- the "city managers" continue to rule from their thrones while they laugh at the locally-elected official jesters. One of these "city managers" was in control and directed the change in water systems- he also refused to add the appropriate treatment to the water to reduce its toxicity so that it would not corrode the pipes- he cited low FUNDS in creating this public health DISASTER. Now people are VERY sick, there are children whose nervous systems are impaired for life.
Now- I know some of you would instantly believe that it was a herd of democrats running the show- because democrats are such law-crushing tyrants, right? No.
Citizenship is not taking a bunch of unsuspecting citizens and poisoning them for the sake of funds.

The schools have been absolutely CUT to the bone.
The roads- never great due to the extremes of winter weather- are AWFUL. If you cross into Illinois or ohio the roads improve instantly at the border. It is embarrassing.

A1C Jackson-- Thank you for the thoughtful post, and I agree with the vast majority of it. When citizens are not active, the government--Democrats or Republicans--expand power. The smaller citizens are, the larger government becomes...plain and simple. When it comes to your comment of "paying your FAIR SHARE," the devil there is in the details. In my mind, "FAIR SHARE" means the same standard for everyone--rich or poor, black or while, young or old. Fair means everyone is treated the same...which is to say that tax codes and regulations should be minimized and simplified so that 1) those at the bottom of the ladder are not crushed by them; and 2) those are the top cannot game them and manipulate them for their advantage. In my mind, we should be just as frustrated w/ corporations that use loopholes to avoid paying taxes as we are about welfare recipients who manipulate the system. Good citizens will fight both. Both are "unfair," and detrimental to a free society. The problem is that the world "FAIR SHARE" has been hijacked by the Left and turned into a buzz word for "tax the rich even more"--as if they will solve our fiscal woes. We can't levy enough taxes to pay for our $19 Billion in debt. Ultimately, we must unleash real economic growth. Finally, I like your comment about roads and infrastructure. If government can't do that, what can it do?!

Thank you, MAJ
I guess what I am talking about with "fair share" IS connected to your statement about the corporations having so many loopholes to jump rope inside. We need to make REAL effort to close those. In addition to this, how about we lower CORPORATE taxes- some. We DO have one of the higher rates of CORPORATE taxes in the world. They should get tax breaks that are tied VERY TIGHTLY to keeping manufacturing interests IN THE STATES. Farming out piecework to China should be punished with HIGHER RATES. When they want to send the jobs to foreign countries, avoid paying all they owe to the nation, and STILL sit on their laurels? No. People are SICK of that. The MIC needs to be reigned in. If going to war were a little (or a lot) less lucrative we would not NEED to spend such VAST sums on the military. I am ALL FOR the military. However, I think our military is in place for DEFENSE. Enough with being the world's police. Enough with the TONS of $ we send to foreign nations so that they won't fight one another (Israel and egypt)- let them finance their OWN nations and militaries. Then require that the wealthy sorts CANNOT hide funds in foreign accounts, or avoid paying higher personal taxes. We in the middle class (what there is left of it) can pay our fair share as well- I don't have much, but I am entirely willing to pay my taxes and not complain about it- WHEN I SEE SOME GOOD COMING OF IT. I think maybe one of the biggest divides between the political ideologies is not being taxed, per se- but making proper choices in how we APPLY those taxes. Some want to be everything to everyone. We can't. Let's stop "saving" everyone else in the world and throwing TRILLIONS down the MIC correct and start working on the complex problems we have HERE today.
As for the abuse of tax dollars- you must be kidding about people "abusing" welfare, right? EVERYONE I know has some anecdote about how they knew "someone" who was cheating the system. I worked in human services for MANY years, and I know that there is abuse, but no where NEAR the scale we see it from the rich boys on Wall Street who are literally ROBBING the American people by living under our umbrella of protection and freedom in the absolute LAP of luxury and failing to PAY for the privilege. All the while Joe working man is having to juggle bills- if you don't know what that is because you have never had to do it- drop me a line- I will explain. In addition, our nation does not spend even a SLIVER of the amount on food and medical assistance for the very poor as we do on the tax cuts for the fabulously wealthy. Not hardly.
MAJ- I would rather pay for 1,000 people to get food if 999 were cheating on it than letting that 1,000th person suffer in hunger. Think on that.
Again, thank you for entering the debate- brave man!!!! :)

I despair that Americans have surrendered liberty in exchange for freedom from responsibility. How can we ever get back the spirit of rugged individualism that made this nation great?

A1C Melissa Jackson I think you're both right to a certain extent. It is factual that none of us were born with the instincts and knowledge that we use at present to be functioning adults in our society. They had to be taught to us; whether directly or indirectly. In other cases it was learned by making a wrong decision, or perhaps many wrong decisions.
Multiple people taught me about playing the horn, but none of them played the horn on my behalf when it was my turn to perform whether for a gig or an audition. Drill Instructors and PMIs taught us the basics of effective marksmanship (at least for those of us who didn't grow up around firearms), but they didn't pull the trigger every time the target went up. We on the firing line did. Getting different software programs for the Marine Corps was a team effort, but the leg work to get the algorithm moving and stay in motion was largely on my following up with the right people.
I for one welcome the idea of rugged individuals. You have to be physically rugged to at least tolerate the high intensity of qualifying for the likes of the Pararescues, the SEALs, the Rangers, etc. You have to be mentally rugged to be an effective leader.

suicides they count: about 6,000 in 2001 versus veterans alive 22 million... has grown 30 percent numbers for 2021 6,349 suicides versus veterans alive 18 million). Even ticket scientists can tell the increase. It's about 30 percent increase in those 20 years. I haven't succeeded YET. But the VA keeps pushing me for my third attempt. So dad for American people.

Thank you Chief! You did it the right way, and then gave back. And thank you for your service in Vietnam--I am grateful for the honorable service you rendered our nation.

I hope to find one place out of the 22 countries I'm headed for. One for every year I wasted in the USAF protecting this divided country. We just missed a bullet to the heart...but, if you stay here past January 2025. You might be prepared for death and destruction beyond our wildest imagination.
