Henry David Thoreau writes that “All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its inefficiency are great and unendurable”. This may be a fact, but what is not a fact is that all men (and women) do not recognize, or at least agree, on when it becomes a necessity to revolt or conduct revolution. Although we may have differing ideas, I believe that we have already been given an exact measurement as to what constitutes an act of revolution against the American government.
In present day America, citizens riot and protest in the streets for any number of reasons. As of the announcement that Donald Trump won the election for President of the United States in November of 2016, it would seem that any reason is also a good reason to go out and call for civil war. That being said, I believe that this is absolute nonsense. I, however, seem to be the minority opinion. In September of 2017, Katie Williams wrote an article for the website “The Hill” in which she stated, “Anti-fascist activists, or ‘antifa’, increasingly mobilized in the wake of President Trump’s election, are unapologetic about what they describe as the necessary use of violence to combat authoritarianism.” Authoritarianism is defined as the enforcement of strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom. Interestingly enough, the only authority that has been asked to be obedient to is the law and I do not believe that abiding by the law is any reason to riot or revolt against the President of the United States.
In fact, the founding fathers, in their ultimate wisdom and uncanny ability to foresee the trials of this country long before they ever occur, left all of us an exact set of circumstances in which it is proper to rise up against our government. In the second paragraph of the United States’ Declaration of Independence, the founding fathers wrote,
“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
It was stated outright at the very moment that our country became a country, when the founding fathers initiated their own revolution against the tyrannical government of Great Britain, the very circumstances that they say fit to begin revolution.
The opposition may argue that we are experiencing a similar state of affairs at present but I submit that in order for a government or, in the case of the always hated President Donald Trump, an individual in government to be considered to be acting in a fashion that constitutes being defined as destructive that one must first identify the laws or article of the constitution that is being violated or disregarded. I ask that those who believe the government has reached a point in which it is time to take up arms against it to point out where violations have been purposefully perpetrated, for without being able to clearly demonstrate that one’s government has overstepped their bounds into realm of tyranny the peoples who choose to arm themselves against a lawful government are not revolutionaries but terrorists; terrorists are defined as persons who use unlawful violence in the pursuit of political aims.
I submit that, as citizens of what, in my opinion, is the greatest country to ever be, that we understand that there is a need for revolution when our government turns on us, but that time is not now. I believe that if and or when the time to take up arms is upon us that every man and woman will be able to see it. I believe that it is time that the citizens of this country recognize not only that there may be a time for revolution but that they recognize the correct set of circumstances laid out for us by our founding fathers to know when that time has come.

I always liked Stokely Carmichael's take on a "successful" revolution: (paraphrasing) You don't win a revolution or end a revolution. You start a revolution - and win battles. Once the immediate goal is achieved (referring to the American Revolution) then you need to continue to be vigilant, and continue to fight when necessary for what you fought for in the first place by being an informed and participatory citizen. (From his presentation at a symposium about "Revolution" during spring break at college 1967.)
I think "continue to fight for what we fought for in the first place" more or less says it all, given that government since that time is an extension of our original stated values, principles, and ideals in the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. In other words freedom is not free. We didn't "win" our freedom so we could rest on our laurels.
I suggest that constant vigilance along with timely successful responses to problems, do not necessarily require revolutionary combat. We are required though to pay attention, be informed, and be advisory participatory citizens - and to have patience, reasonable sound judgment, and a willingness to use the laws we have and to use the system we have to revise them as necessary, and we need determination, and . . . plenty of patience, then more patience.

The only revolution I dream of is one where people register to vote, show up at the polls, and run for office if they don’t like the way things are. With so many people not really participating in the process, regardless of “side”, I despair.

I am convinced we are very close to a civil war. As such I am preparing for it. Immorality is rampant in all areas of society and especially so in the military. In this nations last election 63 million people crawled over broken glass to vote for a great America. Those who embrace immorality and a perverted lifestyle are fighting against everything that has made this the great nation it was. Sadly the once proud military that helped to make this the great nation it was. Is now leading the charge against this nations once proud people and their high moral values. The government has indeed reached the point of immoral and perverted oppression of its people. The good and decent people of this great nation can stand by no longer. We must begin the revolution by ballot (and if such methods are denied us) then by civil war. Immoral and perverted lifestyles destroy nations (history stands at the bar of justice in proof of such a judgement.) If the good and decent citizens of this great nation do not start the revolution now. There will be no great America for our children and grandchildren.

You sir are not alone in your beliefs,it does seem to be a minority thought,but you are not alone by any means,it is a sad state of affairs, if we check into the way things are being taught to our children is outlandish,teaching them that the Constitution was written so the government could more help the people,which is the complete opposite and wrong.Wish everyone thought like you sir.

Actually, there are quite a number of instances where the government has and is acting in violation of the Constitution. Remember, one of the catalysts for the American Revolution was the taxation of tea. The federal government and a number of state governments already put an insane burden of taxation on the people. Not only that, but the IRS or state governments will take your home or land for unpaid taxes. That certainly isn't something that the Founding Fathers planned as being just. Nowhere does the Constitution grant the government the right to steal private property. As for the inalianable right to bear arms that "Shall Not Be Infringed". there are all sorts of infringements on that. Most notably the National Firearms Act and Gun Control Act. What I see is a Federal Government that is now overbloated and out of control and numerous state governments also the same. They pass laws KNOWING they are violations of the Constitution but also knowing that it will take years before the Supreme Court overturns those unconstitutional laws (if it ever does) and in the interval, they are still "The Law". There are many, many more current laws that are Constitutional violations federal agencies that enforce them. Some of them are environmental. Imagine a landowner being fined for making a pond on his own property. It was deemed a vilation of some inner water commerce act or some such nonsense. In Oregon the state government has declared it OWNS the RAIN! Homeowners can be fined for collecting RIAN WATER! I'd say that revolution to throw out the overbearing gvernment is coming faster than any of us would think and it is well within the Constitution to do so.

The Revolutin that everone seems to be screaming about in the anti fa movement and its ilk..has ANYONE of them ever researched the French Revolution or the Communist Revolution of 1917? Each of these *Revolutions* started out as well thought out by men who were determined to change things for the better. The next step of the *Revolution* was to start eating their founders ie Decapitation in France or slave labor camps and prison in Russia (Siberia) after that they started in on the lesser officials like bank officers, shop or factory owners, farmers and even the military. Anti fa *claims* to want the present officials out, all well and good, but who do they replace them with? themselves or people they approve of? In either case they will turn on each other at some point for not being true believers or Antifa enough. Anti fa members have given as near as I can tell ABSOLUTELY no consideration to who they will replace these officials with that they want removed...read Trump, et al. No a 2nd revolution is to coin a phrase..a mugs game proposed by idiots to other idiots. Antifa is no political movement unless being a thug and a street brawler makes you a movement. A 2nd revolution maybe coming but it wont be because of these loud mouthed street punks.. A 2nd revolution will start in the private homes and gathering places of the ordinary citizens who will realize the government should work FOR US and not US for THEM. The only movement I see from Antifa is their bowels when they go to the toilet in the morning. I would suggest that one takes a good look at something called the Convention of States on the net. And finally VOTE.

I say that we do not fire the first bullet, retaliate. The traders will show others how dumb down and liars they are. We need to to abolish radical political parties in this country, we need to follow the laws that were set in place. No Patriot brothers and sisters, we will attack when the traders strike first.

As long as citizens can select candidates, vote for them to become representatives, and send them to voice their opinions, write up Bills stating them, and get them voted on - up or down, then the citizens have no legitimate reason to resort to riot or armed rebellion. Part of living in a Democracy or Republic is the adult understanding that your candidate may not always win, your Bill won't always be passed, and you won't always get you selfish way. You go with the vote and do the best you can afterwards to make whatever the Majority chooses work. This selfish immature idea that, "If the vote doesn't go my way, I will resort to violence" is the anathema of all things truly American. This country is overflowing with fanatic whining babies. Well , go ahead and revolt - but the Good Citizens and the Government both have the RIGHT to protect themselves from violent attack. So any group that does feel they have reached the point of revolution should understand that everyone that feels threatened by their actions has the right to kill them if they start destroying and shooting. This idea that people can commit violence in the name of their political whim, but be handled with kid gloves after the burning and looting has got to stop. Taking on the Constituted Government mean you get shot down or hang if your Treason fails and you don't take over.
