I went there back in 1971 (I was stationed in Germany at the time). No crowds, almost everyone was Italian. Went again in 1993. Some tourists and one Cruise ship. Not the giant ships of today. Have a buddy who went last summer on the New Giant Cruise ships that are (by far) the biggest building in town when they dock. He said he never got away from the Crowds in the streets or the famous square. And he is the kind that tries to get away from people.
What it means to me is that many more people can afford to travel now than decades ago. And not just us. Europeans, Japanese, and Chinese are showing up in droves at these famous places too. So like most things, it is too much of a good thing.

Sounds capitalistic, supply vs demand, I see no issue
