In 1877, the first African American cadet graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, and in 1976, the first female cadets were admitted. The academy is now under the general direction and supervision of the department of the U.S. Army and has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students.

the United States Military Academy West Point was officially established under the Administration of President Thomas Jefferson on March 6th 1802. The opening was on July 4th 1802. Prior to that a Fort had been established at West Point in 1778. The picture shown here is West Point in 1828 although none of the buildings shown here still stand. I had visited West Point a number of times to include visited the remains of old Fort way up in the hills above the USMA. When I was a Cadet at Bordentown Military Institute, Bordentown, NJ (A Military Prep school) which was established in 1881 We had an annual Trip to West Point and I always went. We always had BMI Cadets that went on to West Point and BMI had an Army ROTC Honor standing that they could make direct appointments to US Service Academies in each graduating Class and always did. A later visit I made years later to West Point was a trip as a Captain in Civil Air Patrol with a group of CAP Cadets and other CAP Officers including My Dad who was a Lt. Colonel in CAP.
