And one last memory of smell. I was training in the Army. They were teaching us SERE training where you learn to escape after you get caught, and how to hide from the enemy. Well, I got caught every time. Every single stinking time. It was embarrassing.
Finally I asked the First Sergeant what the heck was I doing wrong?
“Hughes, you stink.”
“I know that Top! But why do they always find me?”
“You stink!”
“I know…but why?”
He laughed and said:
“Hughes, what in the Jungle,Swamp, Forest, or Field... smells like Brut?”
I turned beat red. I showered every day (which would have given me away anyway, because nothing in a swamp smells clean!) but I also wore Brut. Brut..for crying out loud.
After that, I let myself get grungy for a few days and managed to eek out a pass.

We were taught the same thing at the Visual Tracker Course. While in the field, don't even wash with soap . . .

One of the old guys told me to put green twigs on fire and stand in the smoke. And that’s when I found out what poison sumac was.

Yes, I was 11 Charlie most of my career. Went to basic at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and then Tigerland at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Ft. Knox... Ft Polk as 11B... left with a blue braid. Spent 5 months at Ft Lewis working as a Motor Pool Clerk... 71T... then got levied to Vietnam 11B. Ended up as the Supply Sgt in an Infamy unit.

While at Fort Hood, we went on maneuvers to Fort Polk via chopper and deuce and a half. Went through Leesville in a huge convoy. Many of us were Nam Vets and kinda got a kick out of being back at Polk.
