Absolutely! The KT's had loaned Philip a lot of money and he was aware of the vast amount they controlled. Many knights gave the organization their entire estates as part of their individual vow of poverty, and ultimately the KT's became one of the largest land owners in many countries after their monarch. Additionally, many wealthy patrons donated huge sums and valuable land to them as religious donations. Individually the Knights were poor, but the organization itself was very wealthy. The Templars are also considered to be the originators of the concept of banking. Someone traveling could deposit money with one Templar preceptory, get a written receipt for the full amount, then get monies from other preceptories along their route, with the amount they take being subtracted from the original total written on the receipt. Philip the Fair was broke and owed the Templars a lot of money; the Templars controlled lots of money. Clement, who ostensibly controlled the Templars, was weak and afraid of Philip. Sounds like a perfect scenario for a money grab to me.
