Remember watching him on the evening news as a Wee Lad. Now I'm a Grandpa.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel, It was called a "Zippo Raid". The Marines nor the Army would do it unless they knew the village had VC sympathizers. They would hide the food and weapons, ammunition, and alert the VC if we were in their area. They caused a lot of deaths and WIA's by ambushes and booby traps.
He was a great reporter, doing his job, but not realizing what the effects of his coverage would do over here. He's one of the reasons we were called baby killers and America turned us into animals by the press. It was a war. Shit happens. You do what ya gotta do to stay alive. You might be surprised to know we were shot at a lot by farmers in the their rice paddies, using a weapon, to make it look like they were tilling the dirt. You don't want an armed to the hilt Huey getting shot at. It was suicide by the VC. A buddy of mine got his ear lobe shot off by one of those farmers.

It's a terrible feeling, thinking you did good and realizing you're hated and not accepted.

SGT Bodine - those reporters for the most part were flown out for a short period of time and had no idea in hell what the grunts endured every day of their tour.

SGT Philip Roncari, Yes I know. They wanted to report on the war but didn't want to get too close. We took one of them out to the wire, but that's as far as he went. He asked some questions, then was ready to get back to safety. On the way back my pilot did an auto rotation and the guy nearly puked. He jumped out when we landed and picked up his camera to watch us take off I guess. I flipped him off as were lifting up. Those guys always pissed me off. They thought we were a taxi service or something. The Dough Nut Dollies pissed me off too. We took a lot of them out in the field and dropped them off at an infantry platoon out in the bush. They had nothing to do with us. They shacked up with officers, and when they got through we went back to pick them up. Probably most of them weren't like that, but the ones we took out, were. I guess I was jealous. LOL

SGT Bodine - I personally never saw any reporters in the field with us they were in Plieku though I guess they did not like the Central Highlands in 1966,as for the Dongh Nut Dollies there were some in Tuy HOA but we were not allowed to get too close seemed .like good kids though should not have been there that War was too ugly and made some of us pretty bad characters

NPR just re-aired a 1990 interview in which he said the only time he carried a loaded weapon with him was when he went to bed in a Marine Corps barracks. Incident followed a report of his which came off as painting the villagers as victims and "our boys" as heartless terrorists. Hey, war is a helluva thing especially at the grass roots level. Release a "free press" in that environment and incredulity and hurt feelings are sure to follow. My counterpart, Dai-uy (Captain) Thuyet, lost his entire family at Hue during Tet of '68. You certainly didn't see any "over-the-shoulder" reporting of VC/NVA activities during that month-long horror act. Aftermath was tough enough to take. It is my opinion--and my experience--that (with the glaring exception of My-Lai) American combat forces showed remarkable restraint--and a great deal of compassion--when dealing with the indigenous. Not enough of that showed up on the nightly news.

LTC Jones -I think I heard the magic word in your outstanding post NPR every thing becomes clear now,the liberal media has always gone with the evil Military against the peace loving communists, jihadists and every other faction that we have to fight against, thanks again for the truth Sir it is refreshing.
