It has always seemed to me that taxing income is a terrible way to finance government. Fundamentally, it "punishes" wage earners for doing what they do naturally, earn wages. And punishing the most successful wage earners discourages them from being successful. Always remember that there is no such thing as a national economy. The nation's economy is the aggregate of all our individual economies and when we stifle individual success, we are stifling our national success.

Fair, likely not. Too many special interests getting themselves exemptions. Having said that we need some system of taxes to pay for infrastructure, education, security, etc. Any such system that does a lot of taxation to low wage earners will result in the government needing to turn around and give it back to support them so that doesn't make a lot of sense either.
A progressive income tax system isn't nessesarily bad, but one that is super complex and full of loopholes and politically influenced deductions isn't that great either.
