Thanks for sharing the not unexpected news that Lieutenant General Hal Moore has passed away at the age of 94 in Auburn, Alabama SGT (Join to see).
The Battle of Ia Drang was the proof or principle for large-scale air-mobile operations. The Ia Drang area was very hard to reach by ground transportation and well suited for air-mobile insertion of infantry and air-mobile 105 mm howitzers. Then LTC "Hal" Moore commanded the lead battalion of the 7th Air Cavalry Regiment in the airmobile insertion into the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965.
That battle had a primary impact on US and NVA strategy. It served as an example of how the US could insert sizable forces into an area unreachable by conventional roads.
Thanks to the sheer determination of the 7th Cavalry soldiers in his command the battle became a legendary encounter akin to Bastogne for a generation earlier.
