Thanks for sharing significant events of February 21 Maj Marty Hogan
Of interest to me
In 1804 the first self-propelled locomotive on rails was demonstrated in Wales. This invention enabled warfare to be conducted on much grander scales because forces could be sustained much easier once rail networks were established. Many seem to forget that railroads preceded automobiles by almost a century.
1916: Battle of Verdun began in France as German forces attacked the town of Verdun which was rubbled by this campaign. After 10 bitter months, the French were able to prevail after 10 months of fighting. Some battles/campaigns in WWI were named after rivers such as the Marne [1918] and the Somme [1916 and 1918]. Many battles were names after areas such as Second Battle of Ypres [1915] where poison gas was first used on the western front.
1945: During the Battle of Iwo Jima, the escort carrier USS Bismarck Sea is sunk by Japanese kamikazes with the loss of 318 men. I was always curious why the USA had an aircraft carrier named in part after a German leader built after WWI.

The beginning of Romanov rule over the duchy of Moscow back in 1613 started a ruling dynasty that met an incredibly tragic fate. Tsar Nicholas did not deserve to be murdered but then the addition of his entire family being executed also threw his death into a terribly atrocious crime. He ruled for almost a quarter of a century, presided over two bloody wars with an ill equipped military, and proved himself to be best suited as an academic in some university. He was in over his head and the policies that hurt his nation were imposed largely by his appointees who ruled in his name.
