In a November 2015 Huffington Post blog (titled "The Parades Are Over. Where Are Your Vets?) I noted that many Americans take time on Veterans Day to honor those who have fought - and still fight - for our country. For others, the day slipped by without much notice, or was an opportunity to go to the mall for the Veterans Day bargains.

My lament (no other way to describe it) at that time. "I can tell you, Veteran’s Day is no discount bargain for those who have served. And, being noticed is what most will starve for over the next 364 days. The parades are over. The services are over. Where are the veterans?"

Here at our non-profit RIP Medical Debt, we're answering that question in part by holding a mini-summit on Friday, November 10, to address one of the least-understood but surreptitiously damaging burdens our veterans face - unpaid and unpayable personal medical debt not covered by the Veterans Administration - a staggering $3 billion annually in VA-denied coverage alone.

I'll bet you also didn't know that 1.3 million uninsured vets and active-duty service members have out-of-pocket medical expenses exceeding their disposable incomes. Or, that men and women in the armed forces are nearly twice as likely to file complaints about debt collection as the general population.
