I think it's because all their aircraft carriers are gone. They were selling their aircraft carriers a way back when the Falklands occurred. Here is another story I found that was equally troubling. To get rid of your aircraft carriers just the Cold War? I guess too much money put into social programs left no money for defense.

If anything where to go sideways in Europe they are the same WWII speed bump now as they were then. As such I'm in favor of them having resources that will integrate seamlessly with out stuff. As well I don't see the UK joining the axis of evil anytime soon.

England is a trading nation, just like US. More importantly, they can't feed their people without imports (just as during WWII). Why then don't they have an adequate navy? Simply because they have been relying on US to protect the sea lanes while spending their wealth of social welfare programs that have weakened rather than strengthened their nation.

Yes, think they are finally realizing that just because the Soviet Union no longer exists they made a mistake in scaling back their military.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - The more immediate mistake that needs rectifying was committing cultural suicide

CPT Jack Durish The Brits have been doing that for centuries, you'd think they'd have it figured out by now.
