When I was younger around 10, my grandfather and I were working onthe farm doing something. He used his pocket knife to pry something off and it broke the blade. He asked for mine and I said I didn't have one. We got inthe truck, went into "town" to the Western Auto and he bought him a new one and got me one that day as well. He then told me every man needs a pocket knife with him at all times for various reasons. Never know when you will need it and he was right...ever since that day I have either had a picket knife or a leatherman tool with me as natural as car keys and a wallet.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - I forgot once at the airport I had a pocket knife in my pocket...think goodness it wasn't my good one or I would have returned to the car and hoped to make the flight before those bafoons got to keep it...I wish that if you forgot you had it they could have you fill out a form stating you would return in a certain amount of days, lock it up in an envelope with your name on it, and when you return show ID and get it back.

I grew up believing the Swiss Army knife was the best thing in the world. Then I stopped carrying any kind of pocket knife when pulling out a knife at school no matter the benign use brought unnecessary attention. Then came the Leathermen and the Gerber; always carried one or the other in uniform. Today I carry a custom stainless steel 3 in pocket knife with the 2/13 CAV crest that my Squadron provided to any Trooper willing to buy one.
A good knife comes in handy much like a lighter whether you smoke or not, but neither makes you a man nor defines who I am. Just my opinion.

Had a police officer tell me that they now even consider those key chain knives deadly weapons.
